Distance viewer window coating peeling off.

I did something stupid today. I try to cover the distance viewer window on all my leica s lens with electric 3M tape to protect it from scratching. But upon peeling off. The tape took out most of the coating!!!

I have to keep the tape on from now on to cover the ugly patch.

Just to share this to warn people from doing what I did.

Perhaps peeling the tape left some of the tape's adhesive on the plastic window' date=' and it will clean off?[/quote']

It's not. It is the coating that got peeled off. All three of my lens. Hahaha. Anyway. It's just cosmetic. Just a warning for others not to do the same as me.

thank you for the warning, looks as the coating is not very effective. I thought it was anodized aluminium, but probably the S lenses are not made to the same standard as M lenses?

There's a small glass window to show the distance readout for focus. It has a green hue coating to it, it is actually quite thick cause I can feel the level difference of the coating to bare glass. It's quite thick. I think it's already design to be quite scratch resistance. hence my big fat stupid head with stupid ideas.

Anyway, I think the workmanship of S lens is way better than M. But this little bit of glass is an exception rather than norm...

Neither of my S lenses have a green coating on the distance window... completely clear with a black edge.

Sorry to hear your window is marred. My two lenses also have the green coating, as mentioned it is similar to the coating on a filter and can only be seen at certain angles. I'd be curious if Leica can replace the window, the lenses are weather sealed iirc and that may make it more complex.

It might be that there have been changes to the S lens range, since you have late production lenses with internal shutter.

Maybe Leica updated the distance scale window glass with an anti reflective coating in the process?

I remember my non CS lenses to have a crystal clear looking window, but have to check when I handle them again.

The coating feel quite thick and quite scratch resistant, however, the bond with the glass doesn't look to be that robust.

Hahaha, a mere 3M tape sticky surface will pull it off.

Odd.

Is the 'coating' just a protective film I wonder, the type that is often applied to new products, it's like a very thin tape, and your 3M tape has simply pulled some of that off?

Have you asked Leica about this?

It's definitely coating like those on the UV filter... I have asked leica, they said they will get back to me soon. Not sure when though.

Kim, I just checked - my lenses do also have a coating - it is very visibly a coating that is not really scratch proof.

The lens I bought new and barely used so far shows that this coating rubs off the slightest bit around the edges of the window.

One lens I bought refurbished from Leica and despite the pristine overall cosmetics, the coating on the distance scale window is clearly worn, when viewed at a steep angle towards a bright light source.

If indeed it was thought as an antireflective coating it is clearly not sufficiently strong to handle normal use of such a lens - hence wondering if it is really just a "anti scratch film" as mentioned ?

I think it's really a sort of anti scratch and anti flare substance... I feel that layer quite thick and robust. However, just not bonded perfectly... no news from leica though.
