enboe Posted March 1, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like many of us on the forum, I have had the privilege of upgrading to the newer generations of Leica digital rangefinder, but have also retained my M8 since purchase. The new digital has been very reliable for me, so the M8 has been sitting for months in the closet. I did take it out for some IR experimentation, and will keep it for that application regardless. In the mean time ... May I submit the challenge to our community to put your retired M8 to good use? Loan your M8 to a Leica friend or protege to give them the opportunity to work with a Leica digital and the accompanying workflow. The value of expanding our community and the personal relationships it entails far outweighs the consequence of a possible small scratch or rub mark to a top or bottom plate. I have an acquaintance of many years who enjoys shooting his M6 very much, but has not made the transition to digital. I am currently reworking some of my early files from the M8 and continue to be impressed. Granted the sensor lacks size and sensitivity compared with current models; but for many users it is more than adequate and a good first buy into Leica rangefinder digital world. It is working well but hasn't taken many photos in its life as a back up camera. It continues to produce excellent files and its quirks, whilst more evident after using the M9, are more tolerable too. The M8 was and is, whatever its detractors say, a fine first dRF from Leica. russell c. greenberg Posted May 23, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 23, 2014 I bought my M8 back in December 2006. I love the camera despite its many visits to Leica NJ for several issues. Right now it is there getting a shutter replacement (upgrade to M8.2 shutter) as I had an unfortunate mishap and needed a new shutter. I will have a quieter camera when it returns, can't wait. I can not afford an M9, Monochrom, or the new M, but I am very happy with my M8, so this is not a total loss. I love the way this camera renders B&W images, especially IR photos, it reminds me of Kodak HIE film in its rendering. I have and old Leitz IR filter, which I use with my 35/2 (1st version) lens, my favorite lens on any camera. To all M8 owners, keep shooting! It is still a great camera! P.S. I am not totally w/o a Leica when my M8 is gone on "spa treatments". I have on old M2 black paint body that has plenty of brassing, still love to shoot film when I have to.
