Advertisement Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Hi leica1215, Take a look here Checking serial numbers. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
richfx Posted February 25, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2014 I haven't seen any Leica lenses without serial numbers. Just google "Leica lens serial numbers" and you'll find a number of sites that identify a lens' year of manufacture.
luigi bertolotti Posted February 25, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 25, 2014 Wiki section of the forum : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Serial_Number_Links_for_Leica_Cameras_and_Lenses (there is something strange in the 2012 range, I think...) If you search for year of production of old lenses, keep in mind that not always a serial number ALLOCATED in a certain year was actually PRODUCED in that year... a quick example taken from our Wiki : 1884101 - 1885000 - Summilux f= 5 cm 1:1.4 - 1961 - 900 1897001 - 1899000 - Summilux f= 5 cm 1:1.4 - 1961 - 2000 My Summilux 50 is 1.884.604... and can be rather sure that it left the factory in 1961. 1875501 - 1876500 - 40 cm 1:5 Telyt - 1961 - 1000 2077001 - 2077500 - 40 cm 1:5 Telyt - 1964 - 500 I have a Telyt 40 1.876.237 ... and don't know exactly when it was built... around '62-'63, by logic. ... and the extreme example... 2500651 - 2501000 - 800mm f/6.3 Telyt-S - 1971 - 350 ... they never reached the end of the planned batch... low and slow sales... stopped at 2500891 in 1994... no idea at all about when my 2.500.874 was made... jaapv Posted February 25, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 25, 2014 Something resides in my mind, Luigi - didn't they use 1939 lens numbers for a batch of 1954 Summarits or something like that?
luigi bertolotti Posted February 26, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 26, 2014 You remember almost right (year is 1949, not 1954) ... Summarit is a coated Xenon and a batch planned for Xenons was completed 10 years after with Summarits (were those 103 lenses coated ? interesting question for real historicians...) 490001 - 492000 Xenon f= 5 cm 1:1.5 - 1939- 2000 491898 - 492000 Summarit f= 5 cm 1:1.5 - 1939- 103 740001 - 741000 Summarit f= 5 cm 1:1.5 - 1949- 1000

algrove Posted February 27, 2014 Share #8 Posted February 27, 2014 Thanks. Never looked that closely at those gray box labels. Sure enough I just got another M240 and it has a build date or whatever the date represents on it.
