Stealth3kpl Posted February 21, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I read that Leica has moved back to Wetzler and there was some hope that the service we expect from Leica is likely to return. Shortly before Christmas I sent one of my MPs away for some work. It was collected by DHL and arrived in Solmes on 11th Nov 2013. The repair was completed on 11 Dec 2013 and shipped back to me the next day. Well done Solmes! Whilst away on my hols early this year, my second MP seized up (clutch tightened). It was picked up by DHL and arrived at Solmes on 14th of February 2014. The work was completed today, the 21st Feb 2014. Well done Solmes, even better! Both were warranty returns. Beat that Wetzler Pete

semi-ambivalent Posted February 23, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2014 Beat this. 20 year old M6, never failed. No service required. Statistical outlier. For the rest of us Leica's improvements are good news and worth noting. s-a

I seem to be reading a lot more reports of MPs being sent back to Solms than M6's...
Keith (M) Posted February 23, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2014 Whilst away on my hols early this year, my second MP seized up (clutch tightened). It was picked up by DHL and arrived at Solmes on 14th of February 2014. The work was completed today, the 21st Feb 2014. Well done Solmes, even better! Both were warranty returns. Beat that Wetzler Pete Lucky you - my M7 made its third warranty trip (just a week after returning from its second) in late January. The repair tracking website showed it 'in repair' on 4th Feb and it was only Friday 21st that it was updated to show 'repair completed'. But there again, I was not expecting a particularly quick turn around due to the move to Wetzlar, as pointed out by Frau Frankl in the email I received on the 4th:- 4th Feb 2014 Thank you for your mail. The camera has arrived in the meantime and has also been tested. Our workshop will exchange the electronic. Unfortunately, we are moving into our new headquarter building in Wetzlar this and next week, so there will be a delay in repair. We hope that we can keep the waiting time as short as possible so that we can return a good working camera back to you. Please excuse all the inconvenience this has been causing for you. Presumably I will receive tracking information on Monday and hopefully the electronic gremlins will finally have been expunged!
semi-ambivalent Posted February 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted February 23, 2014 Not so sure... I seem to be reading a lot more reports of MPs being sent back to Solms than M6's... But one can't buy new M6s anymore, and without data on the age and handling of the camera when repairs were required I don't know how much you can infer from a cohort of one. Where are these reports coming from? I'd enjoy checking them out for patterns. Certainly there's M3s out there that also have never needed repair. I rule out bad design because it's been too well proven over the last 60 years. That leaves age, trauma, use pattern and bad initial assembly. Maybe Mx's are like computer hard drives. They seem either to fail early on or they'll run for years. I have a few months old MP ALC that's been fine so far (three months, big deal) but if it makes it to twenty years without a repair don't be surprised if I don't post. s-a
Stealth3kpl Posted February 24, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted February 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) In my case, the first MP. Was sent to Solmes because I wanted different framelines and covering. The second is a new to me MP which had had only 10 rolls put through it over its first year according to the previous owner. The next 10 rolls were too much for it, and the rewind clutch tightened. I suspect it was the normal bedding in of a mechanical device. Pete

marknorton Posted February 24, 2014 Share #9 Posted February 24, 2014 I think anyone who thinks Solms is spelt "Solmes" has not been paying attention.

Keith (M) Posted February 26, 2014 Share #12 Posted February 26, 2014 Mine arrived today having been posted on 22nd.Indeed, hopefully its last trip. Hope yours has arrived, Keith, and seems sorted. Pete Indeed. It arrived back mid-afternoon Tuesday 25th after replacement of the whole electronic sub-assembly. Checked the previously errant display was working, put a roll of Tri-X in - and with the film speed dial set at DX and with no exposure compensations set, the lower point in the display was flashing. Turned the film speed dial backwards and forwards a few times and the flashing dot disappeared. On just one occasion the whole display was flashing (the same fault as it was sent away for) but this has not (as yet) re-occurred. Spent an hour or so shooting the roll of Tri-X this afternoon and so far the display has behaved. Fingers crossed...
