Does a MM sound like the M9?

The re-cocking noise alerts my wife and daughter to my attempts at candid shots, and even using discrete mode, you cannot keep slinking away or hiding the thing under jumpers etc.

Then they shout at me.

After getting your candid shot you could pretend to focus on something else away from them and then let the shutter re-cock;)

There has always been a bit of individual variation between cameras, but from the M8.2 upwards the sound has been unchanged (except of course the M) The quietest one I had was my original M8 after upgrade.

I agree. My upgraded M8 was a little bit quieter than my newly purchased M9.

It really matters little to me. When you are out in the street, they won't hear you anyway and if you are indoors at public functions not even you will be able to hear your camera.

Discreetness is highly overrated.

It can only alert them after you have bagged the shot. :p As for being shouted at - I have managed that without a camera.

I find they eventually give up and accept the inevitability of it ;) then your candid shots come into their own

All three sound pretty much the same to me. They seem to be a lot more quiet than a Nikon F100 but somewhat louder than a film M - the digital M cameras do not sound annoyingly loud, though (to my ears).

In order to silence your digital M, shoot with a Hasselblad 500 series camera for an afternoon and then go back to your digital M. :D
