MikeEvangelist Posted February 17, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted February 17, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just sold my R8, and was checking everything out prior to packing it for shipment. Fired off several shots with the winder attached, and all seemed normal. Then one more shot, and it just died. The mirror is stuck in the up position, and all controls are unresponsive. Removing/changing batteries does nothing. The film advance lever has no tension. Â It's a 243xxxx serial number. Â Any idea?
Advertisement Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Hi MikeEvangelist, Take a look here R8 dead/seized up. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sc_rufctr Posted February 18, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted February 18, 2014 Sounds dreadful considering you just sold it. Â No ideas really but have you tried it with just the regular batteries? (no winder attached)
MikeEvangelist Posted February 18, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 18, 2014 I did try regular batteries too. Â I've found some minor references to early R8 having their ROMs incapacitated by the winder, but it was several years old, so I was hoping someone might have found a solution since then. Â I'm afraid I may now have an expensive German-made paper weight.
sc_rufctr Posted February 18, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted February 18, 2014 I'm sorry I couldn't offer more... I hope it works out. Â Burt is it worth taking to a tech?
masjah Posted February 18, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted February 18, 2014 Just a "forlorn hope" suggestion based on the vaguest recollections of what I might have read elsewhere (but it's a shot to nothing anyway). Put normal batteries in with no winder attached. Please make sure that the "double exposure" lever hasn't got displaced slightly from the "off" position. Try winding on the film advance sprockets and/or take-up spool from inside the camera, to see if it frees anything up. I don't hold out a lot of hope, but it's maybe worth a try. Dr.Joseph Posted February 21, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted February 21, 2014 Hallo MikeEvangelist, Â I also own an R 8 that is working perfectly over the pass decade. Once the camera failed to function 2 years ago, I cleaned the Copper electronic contacts with alcohol (or WD 40). It became alive !
stuny Posted February 22, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted February 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also, reach in to the battery compartment with an eraser end of a pencil and scrub the gold contact.
jaapv Posted February 22, 2014 Share #8  Posted February 22, 2014 Mine jammed that way. Leica wanted about 600 Euro for the repair… I hope the simple solutions work for you.
MikeEvangelist Posted February 22, 2014 Author Share #9  Posted February 22, 2014 Leica wanted about 600 Euro for the repair…  Since they sell for only about $500 these days, repair is pretty much out of the question.
jaapv Posted February 23, 2014 Share #10 Â Posted February 23, 2014 Exactly why I got another one instead.
