Did you buy your Leica new or used?

2 M8 new, 2 M9, X1 bought new. After 20k clicks, the shutter of the first M8 needed replacement. A digital M I will never buy used. I prefer to pay for Leica`s 2 year warranty and their generous support if something breaks or needs servicing after the 2 year period. I recently had my 4+ year old M9 at Leica for sensor cleaning: Cost for the service: 0.

Problem is clean current used equipment offers savings of only 5 or 10 %. I would rather buy new.

Not much goes wrong with lenses so they are "safe" used. Sometime I have found old lenses in new condition. They usually turn out to take bad pics.

A worn beat up lens, well someone loved it. Buy based on usability to you and cost.

If you want a 3.5 Elmar, there is no choice.

If used, did it work out for you better than a new cam?

from memory:

new Leica M6 titan: big problems. new shutter installed new electricity installed after two weeks #2184645 " bust have been a warm summer batch" was the answer of the importer.

used Leica M6 traveller : small nuisance. Shutter stuck and serviced

used leica M6 black Wetzlar : no problems

used Leica R8 Black : no problem

new Leica R 8 Chome: no problem

new Leica M6 TTL Black: no problems.

new Leica Mt TTL " die Letzten " no problem.

new MP : minor problem after 2 1/2 years. Shutter could not arm because of loose thumb.

used MP no problem

used digilux 1: no problem

new minilux new shutter after 3 years.

new M8 no problems

new M9 minor problems with sensor

new " demo " en overhauled M no problem

In my experience , it does not make a difference to buy new or used you could have bad luck with both. I was lucky because they all had warranty. It did not cost me a cent.

M9 new, X1 new, D-Lux 5 new, Minilux new, Mini 3 new, all other past and present film cameras (IIIa, CL, M3, M6, M7) all enjoyed by careful previous owners. A privilege to keep using them. IIIa needed a major rebuild of shutter and rangefinder, now sold as I wasn't using it much; sensor failure on X1, now traded; E05 error on Minilux, traded; all other film cameras were or have been fine. A few hiccups with the M9 with SD card, seems to be fixed in installing new firmware and goes well. Superb camera.

My experience: new does not necessarily equal greater reliability in the electronic and digital era.

Since I was a teenager (many decades ago), I have bought and sold literally hundreds of film Leicas and lenses. I used to read Shutterbug when it was a yellow newspaper.

This echoes my own experience. Back in the early 70s, I worked in a camera store that sold Leica. I was selling Leica at age 15! My dad was a Leica guy and I learned from him. I was always around Leicas and selling them was a natural. I had my own M3 and Black Paint SL in junior high.

The memory of Shutterbug when it was a yellow newspaper really brought back memories. I was 26 when I opened my own camera shop with my dad, and of course I immediately applied for a Leica franchise and got one!

I was an active Leica USA dealer for over 20 years and used to advertise in Shutterbug back in the good old days. Stan Tamarkin, Don Chatterton, Jim Keel, King Grant (KEH), Ken Hansen, Leica Eddie Tillis until Leica made him stop using Leica in his name. We were all there and I developed many personal relations that lasted up to the current day. This was long before the internet or ebay. I had an 800 toll free number 1-800-755-LEICA. It was great and I loved every minute of it!

Getting back on topic, I always would purchase "code U" or demo goods for either display or personal use. They were essentially brand new with a lesser warranty. I bought my M9-P as a demo last spring. Virtually brand new with a 2 year warranty. Works for me.:) A lot of my demo goods are still going strong as part of my collection.

Skipping all the SM and R which I bought used and later sold.

M4-2 bought used and sold

M7 bought used (still have)

All of the film Leica's had no problem of any kind.

M8 bought new, then sold. No problems

2 M9 bought new. Crack sensor and bad shutter. Both repaired free of charge after the warrantee expired. Both traded for new M240.

Monochrom bought new, and still have. No problems.

M240 bought new.

Lenses, are different. About half are new or demo, and half are really used. Problems, my (new) 75mm Summarit had to go for repairs twice as the aperture ring came lose. My MATE (used) has been in repair three times, the last time because the entire front of the lens fell off. One lens I purchased on Huffs site was claimed to have perfect optics but had a chip in the front element. But considering the 18 lenses I own and the few I have sold that's pretty good.

I bought my first M3 in 1967, Elmar 3.5/50mm

Then M2, M4, M6, M8; IIa and some SL, SL2, R4 (gave up reflexes many years ago)

Now I use M2, M3, M5, M6, but mainly M9 (90%)

Problems: M6 (shutter repair after 15 years), M8 (several), M9 (cracked sensor)

Otherwise no problems at all. Great cameras, I enjoy them very much!

M9, X1, D-lux5 always new

I wanted minimum problem. You want something never touched, imaculate. It is like a new car.

I always intended to keep them as long as possible. But now, when I saw their price on the second hand market, I would consider not buying new. I would prefer to invest on lenses and change body more often...

I bought all my Leica gear (M-E, 50 'cron, 35 'cron asph) new from Leica in Mayfair.

Fabulous service; I had no problem paying full price. I think as soon as you walk in and say "I'd like to purchase a camera and lens, let me see what you have" they take you seriously.

They must get hundreds of people walking in just to gawk at the cameras, leave their fingerprints all over, and leave.

It was nice as they have the service centre just across the road. The woman serving me took me over and made me a coffee whilst I waited for everything to be scanned and packed up. A real experience.

First I ordered from Angelo Pelle a half case, which lay unopened for months while I waited. I bought my ME from EBay as there were none in stock in Melbourne and I had waited months already. New 50cron from Michaels when the ME body arrived and later a 35cron ASPH from EBay while I was in LA.

My other cameras have always been new unless antique.
