Yes, not all Leicas...the film Leicas work well, if you hold the shutters open with B, for as long as you like.

The digital Leicas are the problem with long exposures.

My reading shows the Leica M240 has a maximum B limit of just 60 seconds.

Re Leica failures compared to other makes: no, you didn't, David. I was referring to the original point YLS1 made. I should have made that clear.

 

All cameras regardless of quality (decent) have limitations. Leicas are no different. Whether Leicas have 'far more limitations than most decent cameras' is debatable.

 

Like every manufacturer, I imagine, Leica must make decisions as to what 'limitations' they incorporate into their cameras. As customers we choose, on balance, to either accept or reject these 'limitations'. As a camera user I accept and understand this. My point is that Leicas 'limitations' are the very thing that attract some users, me included, in the same way other camera manufacturer's 'limitations' attract their buyers.

 

If you can't accept that the Leica has limitations that's your problem.

 

I didn't state this. I do not now and never had have a 'problem' regarding accepting the 'limitations' aspect about Leica, or for that matter, the 'limitations' of any other camera brand.

Good luck with the M9 its master piece no doubt about that. i got my leather case from Fast&Prime its a very useful for traveling and you can wear it over your shoulder or over your waist belt. you will need some super wide angle like 12mm perfect lens to shoot landscapes you can see some of my work on this. ISO up 400 is very good. and you dont need more than that as my personal opinion. few lenses like 35mm 75mm will get to long way. looking forward to seeing your M9 shots. Keep them coming

Leica M's are a unique experience. I have never had issues with any of mine. Or at least nothing that couldn't be chalked up to not knowing how to use the camera. I have an M6 and M-E and a Digilux 2. The images and the feeling I have when using these cameras far exceeds the minor annoyance of having to learn how to handle SD cards properly and using a Rocket Blower once a year to blow dust of a sensor. I am sorry people have had some issues with these cameras but I think by all accounts the majority of cameras are good. There is nothing like a Leica. You pay for the experience and the image quality. There is nothing for me like having a Leica rangefinder with me wherever I go.

To put the M9 in perspective, the M9 skyrocketed sales of bodies. Leica lenses were difficult to find new or used until recently. The popularity of the M9 continues today with the M and Monochrome, both announced in 2012 with availability easing 1-2 years later.

If the problems were severe then sales would certainly reflect it.

 

The M9 is a camera/sensor announced almost 5 years ago and from what I hear it's design was started soon after the M8 release. I find it difficult to part with my M9, it is a joy to use, the images are phenomenal and it continues to work well despite rough handling.

heh -- I love the anecdotal posts! Here's mine: I've beat the crap out of my M9 and it has never failed me. I smashed the LCD screen on the corner of a hard wood chair when the camera fell out of my bag, but other than that no problems.
