Several years ago I purchased a 1956 Summarit 1.5 in screw mount on Ebay. It arrived in overall nice physical condition with clean aperture blades, smooth focusing and for what I paid about USD 400, I thought not a bad lens. Then I started shooting with it. Then I put it away and intermittently picked it back up because every time I shot with it I was unimpressed by the crappy pics I got. Very low contrast, hazy, foggy.

Careful inspection showed that there were no scratches, but some fogging of interior elements.

When I got the MM, I really wanted to use this lens and I posted a few pics with it last month asking if what I was getting was typical and folks told me no, that lens needs to be cleaned.

I sent it to Sherry Krauter in New York on 1/2/14 and it arrived today. She did a CLA for a very reasonable price, she did not have to take apart the helicoid, but cleaned the elements and diaphragm and put it all back together to Leica specs for $95.

Best money spent in a while!

Below is the before and after, simple shot of the same subject.

Great communication, great service and now i can post pics on the "through old glass" threads!

P.S., Focus was on the silver knob above the coffee cup. at f1.5

Thanks Sherry!

Now you've ruined the atmospheric effects.:)

Sherry does good work. Unfortunately she doesn't calibrate digital Ms, only film cameras. So it's DAG (Don Goldberg) when needed. Hope they both stick around for a while…often better and quicker, and cheaper, service than Leica NJ.
