Tuesday AM in the States now, and William L. and Ron Schmidt (and their entourage!) are solidly into day two of their travels.

As the Forum is, and would not be, the same without them I figured to start a thread for those who might spot these two travelers as they wend their way around merry old England.

With a little luck perhaps we'll get a firsthand update from the field by them personally!

Anyone have anything to report?

;)

Thanks.

Allan

Fortunately I will be remaining at least 150 miles from their most northerly approach.

:)

Keep checking BBC NEWS | News Front Page though - there will be something there before the week is out ;) However, I think that the chances of William mastering the complexities of a 802.11g connection while on the road, are pretty slim :D

OTOH, maybe he will send some pics taken with his camera-phone? LOL!

I regret to declare a total failure to engage. I was due to meet the dynamic duo on Monday afternoon, but work consumed my time.

Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time I had a chance to pick up my M7 and take it out for an airing...

Regards,

Bill

PMFJI. From Scotland I hv. to report 'not able to engage' - for sure they would not be able to cross border w/out adjusted IFF system though... In addtion to this, I do not shot until shot upon.

:-) You guys have fun - would you... I'm not involved at all in your business but check out one pint if you hv. some time to spare.

There used to be a summer holiday newspaper game which involved a prize of 5 UK pounds for the first person to spot 'Our Man at [name your own resort]', the man in question being identified by a very murky photograph. You were supposed to approach him and say something ridiculous like 'You are Lobby Ludd and I claim my 5 pounds'. Well, I reckon that anyone approaching a total stranger with that greeting deserved every penny they got.

I'd like to claim 'my 5 - or even 10 - pounds', but fear of being found out compels me to admit that I was their host and guide on Monday and Tuesday. So, here is my report on the Rakes' Progress. We had lunch together at the George in Dorchester-on-Thames. Ron came into the bar first. I was uncertain that I would recognise him, but I decided that the customized Leica MP is sufficiently rare in Dorchester to reduce the odds somewhat, and it was indeed he. A cigarette-length later, William appeared and immediately took me to task for failing to 'do something' about the 90 degree temperature. A good lunch followed, during which we raised a glass in the direction of Bill Palmer who, we correctly surmised, was trapped at work. Sorry you couldn't make it, Bill. After that we adjourned to Dorchester Abbey to burn some film/pixels. The shot below shows Ron in concentrated mood. He really is a wonder to behold: he knows immediately and exactly what film and lens are required for any shot he spies. None of my dithering about. What is more, he finds possibilities where I see none. Accompanying him was the sort of education I would cheerfully have paid for - but don't tell him!

We were to have gone on to Oxford, but sleepless flights had left them knackered, so we picked up next day at the Hook Norton brewery (which is where I took the picture of William, to whom I apologise for removing his feet), followed by an afternoon in the company of fellow forum member Philip Rigby at Broughton Castle, extensively used for 'Shakespeare in Love' (the house that is, not Philip), a 'girl's film' according to a still jetlagged and curmudgeonly William. But if the girl in question is Gwyneth Paltrow, that's all right by me. I am attaching an image of William's hired Morgan car and my wife's Mazda, which I was permitted to borrow for the day on conditon that I washed it. For the 'official' Morgan photograph, wait for Ron to return. The evening saw us walking around Great Tew, the perfect spot for those who like their villages to nestle and their cottages to peep, followed by an excellent dinner at the Crown in Church Enstone. I mention it just in case anyone should be in the vicinity (south of Chipping Norton) and is looking for somewhere to eat; it's excellent.

On our way to Broughton, William almost collided with a Land Rover. It would be his perfect way to go, crushed by a Land Rover while at the wheel of a Morgan.

Today the intrepid duo were off on a cross-country treck in a friend's Land Rover. After that they leave Chipping Campden, where they have been staying, for Leicestershire where they are to attend a giant Morgan rally. I was tempted to join them, but I'm afraid my interest in cars doesn't stretch quite far enough. The real temptation would have been another instructive few days in the company of two dedicated and opinionated photographers. Incidentally, trying to organise them is a nightmare. As I told them, it's like trying to herd cats.

So, great fun, albeit tiring in this heat. I'm pretty confident that they are having a good time. They will be flattered to know that people are interested.

I wonder if this is the longest post yet on the new forum. Apologies to those who have never heard of any of us, though I doubt that they are still reading. I blame that Allan Brewer for raising the matter!

All the best,

Chris

Sorry, I can't find a way to attach titles to the pix, which should be:

1) Ron hard at work.

2) William ditto, but contemplating his free drink.

3) Broughton Castle.

4) Two cars sheltering from the sun.

5) Des Res in Great Tew.

Chris - Your writing made me feel that I was there. Brilliant! You've got William in full splendour - minus the feet, but I'm sure you heard enough about that. :D

Chris, thanks for the report... I regret even more missing it now!

I am reminded of the Scarlet Pimpernel...

"They seek him here, they seek him there..."

Or maybe William and Ron are the Thelma and Louise of the Forum...

Regards,

Bill

I've asked the bar staff to watch out for a Morgan in the mews.

ROTF, LMAO!!!!

:D :D :D

That is funny!

Chris, thanks much for your insightful report. Looks like things are going well enough...no bruises on III's neckline indicating a strangling attempt yet!

:D

Thanks.

Allan

Andy, that is what William drives. He has one of his own here in his garage...loves the thing, calls it his "mistress".

:)

I reckon now fortyeight hours since our last confirmed sighting of the boys. Surely someone has caught a glimpse of them since....

Perhaps the Police blotter would be a good place to start....

:D

Thanks.

Allan

That one must be 8 years old, judging by its number plate.

What sort of place hires out 8 year old cars? ;)

There's a TV programme about to start in 5 minutes on the BBC about traffic police in the UK. There's bound to be a sighting of our very own "Bonnie and Clyde".

:)
