xardas Posted January 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) like almost every year before this, I am planning a snowboarding holiday somewhere in Alps. In the previous years i used to have my fateful NikonD700 and 2 lenses (24-70mm, 70-200mm). I carried all this in my backpack all day long + a small carbon tripod. I had no problem with this but the D700 is a sturdy camera. I used a very well padded backpack from Burton and i do not fall very often... but you know... you never know... Last year i bought the Leica ME and now i am planning to take it with me on the slopes. I am actually quite trilled because compared to the Nikon gear, Leica is like a small flake. However i was reading the other day that rangefinder cameras are quite sensible to shocks. Now I am still planning to use my old burton f-stop backpack which even if it is big, it has very good padding. And hopefully i will not fall too hard. I am sure there are some people skiing or snowboarding with their Leica so maybe you can share your experience on this subject. Do you think it is safe to take the Leica with me ? Advertisement Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Hi xardas, Take a look here snowboarding with leica M9/ME. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2014 Seeing that back injuries are specific to snowboarding I don’t think it is a very good idea to have a hefty piece of metal strapped to your back. I would use a side or front carrying solution if I were you. Having been skiing with M cameras for decades I have never experienced a rangefinder out of adjustment by this treatment, despite my share of spills and bumpy slopes. They have been knocked out by slamming to the floor, for instance, or by the vibration in a less-than-optimal light aircraft, but never by the cushioned kind of shocks they get when skiing or cycling and such. Do you think it is safe to take the Leica with me ? Take it and don't worry! I do have some first hand experience of dropping sacks in the Alps! Over 50 years ago I was mad enough to be a mountaineer and used to take my (still flourishing) IIIg with me. On one occasion I had it wrapped up in a thick pullover inside my non padded sack as some friends and I climbed down from one of the Chamonix Aiguilles. I managed to drop the sack and it went bounding away down some steep stuff out of sight. We eventually found it resting on some scree a few hundred feet lower. The sack was a bit torn, but hadn't burst open. I was expecting to find broken bits everywhere inside but, when I untied the top but the camera was absolutely fine and the rangefinder was still in adjustment. Zero out of ten for me, but ten out of ten for Leicas! The IIIg remains fun to use, alongside my ME.
leffe Posted January 23, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 23, 2014 +1 I always take my M, either the M7 or the M240, with me. Sometimes even just with the shoulder strap. I would suggest to put on a small as possible lens. And when put into a backpack, Leica's own neoprene case is excellent. Ride on. :-)
MXpro1 Posted January 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 23, 2014 Imho it should not be a problem, I would also suggest the M neoprene case. My M9 is with me nearly everyday and everywhere, no problems with RF adjustment so far.
tobey bilek Posted January 28, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) If I remember correctly, Oskar invented the camera so he could take it on the ski slopes.
