earleygallery Posted January 17, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted January 17, 2014 Probably the Elmarit 35 f2.8. Why?
masjah Posted January 17, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted January 17, 2014 Probably the Elmarit 35 f2.8. Why? Â That, or the 50/2 Summicron R; there's hardly anything in it, according to the Wiki.
Icarus Posted January 18, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted January 18, 2014 Probably the Elmarit 35 f2.8. Why? Â I currently have a 50mm Summicron-R E55 on my R8. I received an R4 yesterday and would like to purchase another lens for the R4. While I love the 50 Cron I would like to get something different (28mm - 50mm) but still as small as possible. Any advise would be helpful.
wildlightphoto Posted January 18, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted January 18, 2014 The first version of the 28mm Elmarit-R is smaller and lighter than any version of the 35mm Elmarit-R and lighter and nearly the same size as any 50mm Summicron-R.
ryee3 Posted January 18, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted January 18, 2014 Isn't the second version 28 mm R lens a better lens than the 1st? Can any one with experience with both comment? I've not seen too many of these for sale! Is the second version a must have lens?

The second version's reputation is as you've described (no personal experience however). However it's not the smallest R lens. According to Leica product info the first version is 40mm long with a 63mm maximum diameter and weighs 275 grams and the second version is 48mm long with a 67.5mm maximum diameter and weighs 435 grams. Icarus Posted January 18, 2014 Author Share #8  Posted January 18, 2014 While the 28mm elmarit 2nd version and the 35mm elmarit 2nd version sound to be smaller lenses than the 50mm summicron 2nd version with built in hood I believe that they will be quite a bit larger than the 50mm summicron with the hoods attached. I have also read that a hood is necessary at all times on on the 28 and 35 elmarits due to lens flare. Does anyone out there have any experience using these lenses without the hoods? Any input is appreciated. I have owned virtually every M series lens but am new to the R series.
Icarus Posted January 18, 2014 Author Share #9 Â Posted January 18, 2014 Also, does anyone out there have any personal experience with the hoods and filters for the 28 and 35 elmarit second versions?
xalo Posted January 18, 2014 Share #10 Â Posted January 18, 2014 Hi there, The 28mm Elmarit vs I draws less contrasty than the later version, which is also noticeaby sharper in the corners at wider apertures (at infinity before f5,6, I'd say). Still, I preferred the combination of lower price, more gentle rendering and compactness of the older lens and sold the much more expensive newer one. That said, I guess the Elmarit-R 28mm II is technically speaking almost irreproachable and it's drawing and colours are in line with the newer R-lenses. For the old version, Filter size is a 48mm screw-on or series VII held by hood. Occasionally I used a series VII polarizer in the hood, which has a little wheel to turn the filter without taking it off. Not always that easy to operate, but works well enough. Also used the lens without hood and didn't notice excessive flare, but then the conditions were probably not challenging. I keep a 48mm UV B&W pro series filter on the lens (since I found one...). And, while the 35 wlmarit v2 does use an add-on a hood, v3 (which is optically identical to v2), has a built-in hood also. I had the latter and had little or no problem with flare.
