2014 - Possibly a big year for Leica

Ahh, I see. Thanks.

Well, my criticism would not be mount to LCD thickness, it would rather be front of body to back of LCD thickness, together with overall mass. My A7R suggests, with it's very thin body dimensions and weight, that it is certainly technological possible to have an M6 size and weight digital M. I don't think Leica will do it, nor do i think that they are capable of doing it.

Duncan - As I had the A7R before I returned it for excessive shutter vibration on R-lenses and poor corner performance on all of my M-lenses under 75mm, I did compare the dimensions to my M240. The A7r is taller and one side (with the grip) is thicker, the other side is thinner and the thickness with a lens is more. The A7r is not as wide. The A7r overall, with a Leica M-lens on it wasn't really much smaller. But, it felt less well build and it was not water resistant. The grip in my hands was cramping and I find the M240 to be much more ergonomic.

It seems the "technology" executed in the M series seems to be ahead of the A7R in corner sensor performance with my M-lenses and over all ergonomics. Maybe, the thickness on either side of the mount can be thinner with time, but I am better able to grip the M compared to the A7R with its cramped and small grip, for my hands.

If the Leica M were able to put a 60mp sensor into its camera, 6k video, some kind of electronic rangefinder focussing as well as optical and allow the camera to beep once focus was manually achieved on the existing lenses then they would be well set. This kind of tech is conceivable?

1. What are you going to do with 60mp images apart from clog up another hard drive .... the Nikon D4 is only 16mp and most pro's don't need much more....

2. Electonic focussing has a long way to go to beat manual optical ..... unless you are after moving targets in which case high end autofocus is the only solution ....

3. God knows why you want video. I have never pressed the button in 10 months of having an M. Get a video camera....... any way even 4k video is hardly mainstream....

Conceivable doesn't equal necessary. If it comes it will be marketing hype, not what the punters actually want..... until they have been convinced they are deficient by not having it ....

....... but I'll still be first in the queue......

I wouldn't worry about this topic too nuch.

Other companies likely will get to 60 MP first anyway.

Not sure why you would write this. CMOSIS has had a 70MP sensor for over a year and a half on their product list. Leica, after all, beat everyone to the 24MP mirrorless camera a year ago.

If, Leica viewed more mega-whatnots as an important design goal, I see no reason they could not do it "first."

If rumors are correct the T will be an APS-C just like the latest Panasonic. Will this one be double the price of the Panasonic like back when the LX-5 came out?

If Leica is striving for 1% market share (I do not know what their percentage is right now), but it seems to me APS-C will not be the answer.

Panasonic has an APS-C camera? That would be news to me.

Btw, as far as cameras with interchangable lenses are concerned, APS-C is the most popular sensor format by a wide margin. For any vendor wanting to increase their market share it is an obvious choice.

Michael,

Thanks.

Do you happen to know what the ratio is of DX/FX in terms of number of sold Nikon cameras?

TIA.

Thanks for making my point.

BTW, have you sold your WATE.

Mine doesn't show any corner weakness on the A7R.

That's why I was surprised to see the word all in the first sentence of a previous statement of yours.

Not sure what you mean about making your point.

No. I have not sold my WATE. I sold the A7R is what I meant. The WATE is an exceptional lens on the M240 and was at the very least good on the A7R. Not sure if the corner sharpness was as good as the M240. It was one of the better lenses on the A7R as its design provides a less oblique ray angle to the sensor. I believe Leica designed this lens at the time of the M8 knowing that the current M lineup of super and extreme wide angle Leica lenses would be problematic when used on digital cameras with their inherent cover glass.

On a related note, It was mentioned above that Leica should have known that the sensors on the M9 were going to crack before the reports from users. Maybe, but this is surely secondary to the design need for a thinner sensor cover glass in the edges of the sensor. Probably, explains why other manufacturers did not have this problem to the extent that Leica did on the M9.

Back on topic. I've heard from one source that Leica will release an APS-like sensor camera with interchangeable lenses. I understand it will be "APS-H" (1.33?). The system will include zoom AF lenses. Prime AF lenses made in Germany by Leica will be in the system. It will also mount M-lenses. Should be a gas.

Someone recently told me that Hasselblad has also had this problem in the past with their MF CCD sensors.

Sorry Rick. I know you just want to dance, but it's not worth my time in this forum anymore.

Stay well.

I have got the same Information from a Leica dealer too - bought a lot of stuff there, so he was speaking open to me.

Just bought a M few months ago, bank account is empty so no T for me, but maybe for the boy friend... He has a M8 and would like to 'upgrade' to something more modern M9 was his first choice but he's already looking at X-Vario, and maybe the T will be something for him. :)
