Sensor replacement...immediate green stripe issue.

Dear all

Today I received my M9, after four months in Germany, with a new sensor and new leather. I just attached a 35mm f2 and took a few shots as tests before returning home. It seems that 3 out of the 13 shots exhibit the green stripe issue on the top left edge. I've heard this described as a rarity for an M9, and personally I didn't see it once on the previous sensor, which was replaced for a spotting issue.

The attachment is an example of the problem.

Am extremely disappointed. I'm sure this will have to go back to the factory, with no doubt another long delay. As soon as it comes back, fixed, it's going to be sold. Have had enough. I see no point in putting up with a camera that spends half the bloody year in the factory. Unacceptable.

There is currently another thread which mentions this green stripe, which looks suspiciously similar. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/314782-miscoloured-area-picture-taken-m9.html

Assuming you read other thread did you try to shoot different scene with different lighting to determine for certain it is faulty sensor.

I did shoot a few different scenes, some with quite strong artificial lighting, though the picture I enclosed didn't have that. I know these shots wouldn't have been a problem for the previous sensor, so I'm assuming this one is faulty.

As for the example in the other thread, considering the subject, which is hardly 'challenging' for a normal digital sensor, I would find that pretty much unacceptable too. I have never seen the like before in any camera I have used.

Interesting that the green stripe is running across the top, like the example in the other referenced thread. It might be coincidence but odd that two instances would come up in the forum so close together. The only time I came across the green stripe with the M9 was three or four years ago and I discussed it in this thread.

I can understand some of theses issues with Leica are enough to PO the Pope.

While there are issues with consumer grade Nikons, I have not seen anything with the pro grade stuff.

I do not read the pages on rebadged to Leica products, I am willing to bet they don`t exist to the degree.

I think their film cameras were very good up until they started the cost cutting measures like Zinc top plates that developed blisters, condenser lenses removed from RF, plastic internals that break, shutter light seals that went bad fast.

Leica is a small company without expertise in electronics and they have to depend on others which is a bad situation. Then they order small batches of electronics which drives the price high.

Right now I have a M8 with 7000 clicks a a M9P with less than 500 and they work perfectly. I will hold off on more.

Some 15 years ago, I bought a second-hand M6 from the Leitz era. It was in near-mint condition. It was my main camera until I came exasperated with the rangefinder 'white-out' problem. A few weeks ago, I decided that I ought to sell it, but discovered that its top plate is now a mass of blisters - good evidence that the slide in quality had already begun by the mid-1980s. I suspect that if I were to return it to Solms for repair it would return with the later unengraved style of top plate and not with the original version with the 'Ernst Leitz' engraving.

Had this problem on the M8 (frequently), then the M9 (very rarely).

It is a strong light source at the edge of the frame.

On the M8 the issue was happening with lights on the right/left sides.

On the M9 the issue is when the light in on the upper and lower boundaries.

The result is always a green band running across.

So it seems "normal" to me.
