Morten Grathe Posted April 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today my Leica-dealer finally called me, to say that my M8 and 35mm summilux-asph. is ready for pickup I originally ordered the lens 6-bit coded. They only have it non-coded. How important is the coding for this lens? Should i take it or wait (months?) for a coded. Can i manually tell the camera wich lens i am using? Advertisement Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Hi Morten Grathe, Take a look here How important is 6-bit koding on a 35mm?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Venkman Posted April 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted April 20, 2007 Morten, there's a lot of discussion whether 35mm is needed to code or not. 28mm is without question, but some people (including me so far) don't see a need to code a 35mm, even with filter attached. I'd say try it out and if you feel like you need to code it, do it yourself by using a black marker (so called sharpie pen) and off you go.
jaapv Posted April 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 20, 2007 Dirk is right, there may be a slight cyan drift when using an IR/UV cut filter, but that may very well not hurt the photograph and if it does it will be removable in photoshop. The lens without filter vignettes only marginally and again, if hypercritical, PS will save you. You can indeed try it out with sharpie self-coding, but that will wear off faitly quick. The cost of coding the lens will be about 100 Euro. You can use that as a bargaining chip with your shop. Basically an uncoded lens is very hard for them to sell nowadays at full price. marknorton Posted April 20, 2007 Share #4 Posted April 20, 2007 You should definitely get the dealer to pay for the coding in Solms, €95. All lenses since last July have been coded, so this is "old stock".
stunsworth Posted April 20, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 20, 2007 Morten, I'd go for the uncoded lens rather than wait. I've been using a 35mm ASPH Summicron with my M8 and haven't noticed any issues in everyday use. You always have the option of having it coded at some point in the future. All lenses since last July have been coded, so this is "old stock". Depends on how much he asks. All dealers i know charge $100 less for uncoded lenses....... or if you wish .... Euro 100 more for coded lenses ..... ... both are official Leica list-prices! In other words .... there is a 100 Euro price-difference between coded and uncoded lenses ..! j. borger Posted April 20, 2007 Share #7 Posted April 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have not noticed any cyan drift with the 35 summicron asph yet in day to day use .... did nor try the white walls though!
Morten Grathe Posted April 20, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted April 20, 2007 Thanks for the responses folks. I will go for the lens, and ask for 100 euros off. If I don't like the results, I can always code it later. I have now waited 7 months for my camera, and I really can't wait any more. Have a nice weekend to you all! Eoin Posted April 20, 2007 Share #12 Posted April 20, 2007 Leica have been coding all new lenses for the last 10 months as standard. I'd check to see if your really getting a new Summilux Asph or just some mint trade in.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted April 20, 2007 Share #13 Posted April 20, 2007 The 35mm lux has cyan drift ,it is very slight in the corners but it does exist. Most times you may not notice it like the 28mm cron but it is there
Morten Grathe Posted April 21, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted April 21, 2007 Finally recieved the setup. The amount of cyan in the corners, is very very little, nothing to worry about in my opinion. So now it's time to know my new buddy a little better. So far, I am very pleased!

Whether or not this is extensive enough to bother you would be your personal call. Cheers, Sean
