Jeff S Posted January 2, 2014 Share #21 Posted January 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes there was on introduction. My brain refuses to find the exact location… In the interview with Thorsten on this page, Stefan Daniel says (as I recall) that the M is adequately sealed (or words to that effect) without sealed lenses. I'm too lazy to listen through it again. BTW, this is the same interview where he notes that the RF in the M is improved, despite borrowing from the structure of the M9. earleygallery Posted January 2, 2014 Share #22 Posted January 2, 2014 It could be (indeed it is) a stupid question but anyone think that could be ok to put lens and body in a oven (warm temperature) to dry it faster? You mean in the same way that one would put a wet child or pet in the oven to dry? Just avoid Microwave ovens.
jdlaing Posted January 2, 2014 Share #23 Posted January 2, 2014 You mean in the same way that one would put a wet child or pet in the oven to dry? Just avoid Microwave ovens. Depends solely on the temperature setting for children. Pets are less.
rodluvan Posted January 10, 2014 Share #24 Posted January 10, 2014 ovens are ok, tumbler-driers are not (unless adequately wrapped which, obviously, cripples the possibility of the tumbler to dry out anything), hot air ovens or drying cupboards are the best. just kidding Put it fully extended in a adequately ventilated place, that is all. As to Leica lenses resistance to water; all closed mechanical things built to some small tolerance are inherently resistant to water entering. You could probably, 8 times out of 10, put your lens under the hose without water getting in. I regularly use my Zeiss ZF lenses when it's raining, sometimes even heavily and for long times. They are not, officially, 'weather resistant' yet I've never had a shred of a problem. And even if water enters lens, in a fully mechanical lens, what would be the non reversible problem? It would be highly unlikely that it would reach the glass surface, but get tangled within the barrel and dry out to little or no harm. I do not think corrosion would be much of a problem, considering the lube present on all sliding surfaces. Beyond that, considering that you've invested heavily and very expensive lenses, I assume a clean and lube job every once in a while is not out of the question. These would remove any hint of watermarks etc. so in short: use your gear, don't let manufacturers tell you what is and is not possible, use your common sense. Rick Posted January 10, 2014 Share #25 Posted January 10, 2014 For anybody wanting to bring up the ND-filter-light leak discussion: Water behaves differently from light… One of both getting into a narrow space does not imply the other will. Yes, I understand they have different wavelengths.
janki Posted January 10, 2014 Share #26 Posted January 10, 2014 According to Leica the lenses are made to such narrow tolerances that they do not break the weather sealing. For anybody wanting to bring up the ND-filter-light leak discussion: Water behaves differently from light… One of both getting into a narrow space does not imply the other will. But then you always have this creepy capillary effect. Capillary action - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guest jvansmit Posted January 13, 2014 Share #27 Posted January 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) No, I was thinking about using it in light rain or some snow, not in heavy rain. Being a 7000 dollars camera, I want to be sure before putting it out of my bag while raining... I've used my M240 in heavy rain for several hours without issues (except that I was soaked!)
