gyoung Posted May 24, 2014 Share #441 Posted May 24, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica APO Summicron 50mm f/2 ASPH weighs 300g (and for the shorter flange distance of an A7 / A7R you have to add the adapter's weight and size). The Zeiss FE 1.8/55 - although 10% longer focal length and 1/3 stop faster and including an autofocus - weighs 281g. Leica lenses are heavier true, but because they are made of metal to last a long while. Autofocus lenses are hardly likely to work well for 50 years even mechanically, never mind the motors and chips. But look at the size, even if you add the adapter to the m lens it will still be much shorter. Gerry Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Advertisement Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Hi gyoung, Take a look here A7[R] Images with Leica lenses (open thread). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
3D-Kraft.com Posted May 25, 2014 Share #442 Posted May 25, 2014 The casing of the Zeiss FE is also metal (aluminium) and many plastic materials meanwhile have better mechanical (e.g. selflubricating) characteristics. When I take my equipment on travels, the balance of weight and performance is what counts most for me. Also the chance to catch the moment without loosing time for manual focusing is highly welcome. I agree that a purely mechanical Leica range finder lens will last longer which makes them more interesting for collectors and romanticists. If you really USE them for 50 years, the amount of money you will have to invest for maintenance (e.g. calibration) will be higher than buying several more "digitized" lenses that may go to recycling after 10-20 years. But this discussion is useless anyway as long as you compare lenses with so many different features. If you are willing to pay 7400$ for a slightly smaller (but heavier) lens that lacks autofocus and has to be combined with a bulkier, less featured and also overpized body, that's OK. Guest polygamer Posted May 26, 2014 Share #443 Posted May 26, 2014 Hi, I am trying to find out whether the SONY deficiencies with wide angle lenses are due to the M mount. For this I shall compare M mount lenses with Nikon and Minolta lenses. However, the Deutsche Hilfspolizei patrolling this thread, I may only speak about my findings. --- So, A7 with Leica Summicron 2/35 V4. The Schillerplatz in Mainz. In the background you can see the tower of St. Stephan, where the windows by Chagall are. Have a nice week! Welcome, dear visitor! Guest polygamer Posted May 28, 2014 Share #448 Posted May 28, 2014 Hi, the theatre in Mainz, an Art Nouveau building (SONY A7, Leica Summicron M 2/35 V4). A wider lens is better for this kind of travel photography. (I compared my new Leica Elmarit 2,8/28 ASPH informally with the old Minolta MD 2,8/28 on the A7). I would not recommend it for deployment with the A7 (Better with M9 or NEXen). A Leica R 28 lens would perform better on the A7, I suppose.) Have a nice day! Welcome, dear visitor! I take pictures there for trying out camera-lens combinations such as the Leica Summicron 2/35 V4 and the A7 in this case: Welcome, dear visitor! Guest polygamer Posted May 30, 2014 Share #453 Posted May 30, 2014 Hi, in my posting #449 I mentioned an informal comparison between the Leica Elmarit 2,8/28 ASPH and the Minolta MD 2,8/35. The Minolta is sharper in the corners. However, the price one pays for this are CAs in other areas of the picture. Similar results I had with the Minolta MC 2,8/24 I tried vs. the ZEISS Biogon 2,8/25 and the Leica Elmar 3,8/24 ASPH. So, better performance overall than Leica or ZEISS at a fraction of the price cannot be had with these lenses on the SONY A7!
