The wifey bought me an X1.

Hello.

I am new to Leica. I shoot professionally on the side with Nikon gear. D3, etc. Weddings/portraits. However, I have always respected Leica gear and more importantly, their optics.

I got tired of lugging around a big DSLR with 24-70 f/2.8 lens. I am waiting on an X1 that my wife bought me a few days ago. I do have to say that I am pretty excited. All black. 2 batteries. Leather case. Great price.

I assume it will end up being a gateway drug to an M system, but for now I have read nothing but great reviews...mostly. A slow camera. So be it. I have the Nikon D3 at 10 fps if I want to shoot sports. I wanted a pocket-ish camera with a world-class lens. I think my wife got it right. :-)

Welcome aboard Bender,

It's a great forum, and the X1 is a very accomplished camera.

I took the plunge on the way to Europe (6 week holiday) and shot many images with it. They are as good as I could ever want, better even.

You'll love it.

Gary

Welcome to the forum, Bender. A good choice of present.

Reverting to almost all manual operation comes as a small shock to some who rely on automation. But the X1 is a camera which rewards a little application and patience. Add a hand-grip if you can; it improves handling during a holiday trip or local trip. Also take time to set your personal operating presets, particularly if you are mixing indoor and outdoor photography.

If so inclined, do have a look at one of my X-pictures in this link http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/technology-industry/314137-brunel-contemplating-christmas.html Although taken with the latest in the X-line, it does show the quality of the Leica lenses. I bought my X1 when first released and still use it daily, often for stock photography because the quality is so good.

Happy Christmas!

Congrats, before I got into Leica I was looking for a X1, but then I found out about the M8... I bought a M8 instead with a 28mm Voightlander f2...

Now I'm here just about 2 years later with a M240 and various lenses...

Chris -

Welcome to the Forum and the world of an ever expanding drive to acquire and use all things Leica. I'm certain you'll enjoy the X1 (a remarkable little camera) and I hope you'll post your photos here in the photo section for us to see.

thanks everyone!

yes, I fear I will not be able to control myself once I get a taste of Leica optics. I am very pleased with Nikkor lenses, but Nikon does not make a nice compact mirror-less camera except for the Nikon 1 system...which I had and sold in 24hrs. Terrible.

I will probably wait for the M9 to drop in price over the next 2 years or so and grab one if I am as pleased with the X1 as I assume I will be.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or whatever you celebrate!

Chris

Yes' date=' be warned, this is a slippery slope gateway drug into a new addiction. Soon you'll want even more control... and you'll end up in a swamp of M's. My digital route went like: D2, X1, M8 and M9. Relax and enjoy what's ahead... :)[/quote']

Nice name, and yes Here I went from M8 to M8.2 to M9 to M9p to M240, also R8 DMR and various film Ms

Welcome to the Forum and to your Leica addiction.

It will soon be time to start dropping hints to your wife about an M-system.

Although I must say that if I had addressed my wife as 'the wifey' I don't think I'd be getting anything from her for some time ;).

Welcome to the form Bender you will for sure find yourself at home. Very welcoming community you will meet here. Plus without any PR or Advertisement... No doubt shooting Leica cameras is an occasion itself. Myself professionally shoot with SLRs but took few assignments on M9 and I should say every-time you shoot with Leica it's like "Falling in Love with Photography" again and again. Looking forward to seeing your images here.

Thanks everyone. Well I received it last night and opening the box was one of the most enjoyable experiences...better than an Apple product. A+ there.

I was surprised how small and light it was having never really held one before. However, it is built solid.

Shooting it was very odd at first. Sort of shocking for me since my main body is a Nikon D3 at 10fps and lightning fast AF. The D3's buffer can allow tons of RAW files to write at once and it sees in the dark. Needless to say, the X1 was NOT a D3! Which, is exactly what I want. Something that will allow me to shoot like film. I still shoot with a Nikon FE and love it. I also enjoy a Yashica D med format TLR. The X1 is more like a film camera...especially since the LCD screen is sort of useless really.

Then, I took a look at the files and was very pleased. That lens is worth every penny and to be able to have a pocket camera not much bigger than a few iphones taped together is just awesome. SLR-like quality in a solid little Leica.

I am at work so no real photos yet, but I will try to get out this weekend.

I am a little bummed out that I cannot register it. The last owner did, but I only really want access to the owner's area. I still feel like a Leica outsider despite owning one!:)

Bender.

Either write to the previous owner, and ask them to cancel their registration, or write to Leica Customer support and explain to them, they are quite helpful, were to me anyway.

Once this is cancelled, you will be able to register it. Happened to me with a previous camera.

Leica rocks. I emailed them and they contacted the previous owner. He deleted his acct associated with the X1 and Leica unlocked Adobe LR for me. Wow. That is service.
