Leica X2 battery question

Hello everybody I'm new to the forum and would like some of your opinions on my question.

I have recently become a proud owner of a Leica X2. I've had the camera approx 3 weeks with little use. Taken approx 150 - 200 photos. The camera has also been hooked up to the USB cable via the Mac to transfer the photos.

I went to turn on the camera last night and it failed to switch on? I removed the battery and re-inserted it back in, turned the camera on and the red Leica symbol appeared on the LCD. Then there was a beep, 5 in total before the screen went off.

I'm just a little concerned as some of the research I've done on the net suggests that the battery was good for 400+ photos. I appreciate that the camera has been linked via the USB cable thus drawing power, however doesn't the battery symbol flash when the battery is low?

Hope it's not a fault with the camera.

Would appreciate your feedback.

Many thanks.

There are two things about batteries that may be relevant here. First, "400+ photos" sounds a little optimistic; my experience with the X1 is considerably fewer shots per charge. Second, new batteries don´t reach their full capacity until they have been through a few charge - discharge cycles. This will happen naturally, in normal use: don´t attempt to discharge the batteries extra fast, since it will do some damage to them. Just budget in a little less capacity in the beginning, and they will improve.

That said, and with any digital camera, a second battery (even a third one) should be the very first accesory you buy. This allows you to always carry at leas one spare; believe me, you´ll need it!

Battery needs to be charged and used and then recharged again over several cycles before it acquires full capacity. And yes, downloading images from the camera via a USB lead can drain the battery - especially when it's new. Also, the new battery uses some of its capacity to charge the internal back-up battery. The back-up battery can take up to 60 hours to reach full capacity (from discharged state) and during this time it would be taking power from the main battery.

….

With regard to no battery warning sound on the camera, is this normal?

Not sure, but haven´t ever heard any warning sound from my X1. In any case, you say you did hear five beeps, so they must have meant something.

Recharge the battery and see what happens...

Thank you. Will charge it up tomorrow and go from there.

Additionally, perhaps you didn't give it a full charge when you first started using the camera?

Hi Stuart. As far as I'm aware I charged the battery until the green light appeared on the charging plug?

On another note, I have to say though It's a beautiful piece of kit the X2. I can't stop picking it up:D
