Soft shutter release Poll

Used to have one on an M4, still have one on my M6 where it does allow your finger to find the shutter release in a hurry as you are focusing and a finer sense of the moment of shutter actuation, which can be handy in catching an expression ... but as someone else pointed out you can rather annoyingly then release it accidently when slinging the camera over your shoulder. Have used it on the M8 and M9P where it was OK if not overly convincing but oddly enough using it on the M/Typ240 feels more like the M6 experience so will be keeping it on that and the M6.

After many years of heavy use, the shutter button on my M6 became stiff. I installed a soft-release button, which definitely helped improve the performance. I purchased an MP, but only used it for a couple of years before going digital. I prefer my MP without the soft-release, which feels about the same as my M6 with the soft-release. I also prefer using my M9 and MM in Soft mode, but without an added soft-release button.

i've shot with the soft shutter for a short while, but never liked it. it appears jerky at times but my inexperience with it contributes to the fact. since the title suggests this is a poll, my say is NO to the shutter release. unnecessary little thing.

I shoot with one on my M and find it helps to a degree. I don't notice much difference to the feel of the shutter release, but the added height makes it easier to operate in a lot of situations for my hand. I can actuate the shutter with other parts of my finger besides the tip which can be useful. Especially in gloved operation... Which is incredibly important as I live in Canada.

Similar to trigger pull mods for firearms, I think, they're a matter of personal choice. I do not have too many problems firing accidental frames in my bag, since the camera doesn't return to the bag till I'm done for the day and it's off. At my side it'll shoot off an accidental frame rarely.

It's down to choice. Buy one. If you don't like it, put it away.

That said. If you're the sort that usually keeps the camera in the bag and switched on. Don't buy one. You'll just be frustrated.

Soft button, while nice to use, bumps into things and fires camera. Ok if you want a time exposure of the inside of your camera bag.

Built in discrete moreis more to my liking, but I do not use it as a half press does not hold meter / exposure setting so I can recompose.

I had a soft release then lost it and didn't replace. My camera would sometimes switch on in my bag and I had read that if dropped on the soft release it could have serious implications for the shutter mechanism. The lack of good insurance for my camera dictated that I didn't take that specific risk as the benefit was a placebo in retrospect.

That's twice someone mentioned the possibility of damage in this thread

I'm not convinced personally. Just trying to imagine how this could happen. If you drop your camera I doubt that the soft shutter release is going to be a significant extra risk.

Pros and cons and preferences on using one of course, nothing wrong with that.

"I like soft release buttons.

I have it on my m4p and m9."

Same here except they are different buttons. I have set the camera to release softly and taking the picture now is effortless after I focussed and composed.

Can't use one on my Digilux 3 which has a shiny chrome dome on the release, no screwthread.

Just a report from the ice storm in the Toronto area. I still don't have power yet so I'm out shooting a LOT with no chance of warming my hands back up in a warm house. Well. My car, as I drive around.

Just wanted to reinforce a point... Soft shutter button makes gloved operation waaaaaay easier. Got thick lined leather gloves on and shutter actuation is a piece of cake.
