zgisterak Posted November 28, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I just joined this forum and love the camaraderie here and somewhat unbiased advice. I recently rediscovered my passion for photography. 3 months ago I got X2 and totally love it. I took it to Cambodia and Thailand and took some great pics with it. (Nikon DSLR stayed home:) I love street photography and photojournalism. I go out and shoot every saturday (I live in New York City). My dilemma is I miss the ability to zoom in on the shot. I see great shots but have to use Photoshop to zoom in . I love X2 but have been reading about X Vario here. Just looking for some feedback from members here. Does it make sense to get Vario too? or it's unnecessary? Get less expensive zoom VLux 4 and get rid of Nikon? Many thanks mates... Zach

wda Posted November 28, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 28, 2013 Zach, welcome to the forum! I understand your enthusiasm and progressive thoughts. From what you have written, I think the X Vario would be the perfect solution for you. It builds on the very quality you like in your X2, with some improvements, and doesn't compromise on image quality. The only very slight downside is the starting aperture of f/3.5 reducing to f/6.4 at the far end. BUT, the sensor is much improved and so is the firmware installed; so many users find the lack of lens speed not a real handicap. Image quality is stunning and would provide you with the versatility while travelling, which is denied you with one fixed focal length. Your alternative thought of buying a V-Lux 4 opens up a different range of focal possibilities, but at the expense of relative image quality. In that regard I fear you might be disappointed. But, if the idea of having a long-reach telephoto is more important, keep it under consideration. Both the V-Lux 4 and X Vario are two fine cameras, but for any serious photography I think you would be more satisfied with the X Vario.

If you do not need a super fast lens and long zoom range, it is an amazing camera, high quality pictures and very easy to use. Would advise to buy the EVF (Leica or Olympus). earleygallery Posted November 28, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2013 You don't say which Nikon/lenses you have but maybe try it again with a moderate zoom lens? I'm not sure an X Vario with the EVF attached will be that much smaller or easier to carry. I'd imagine your X2 and Nikon would make a more versatile kit. dkCambridgeshire Posted November 28, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 28, 2013 Since buying an XV I've seldom used my X1. The XV does everything the X1 can do and the XV's high ISO and maximum aperture performances take care of low light situations. The X1 will probably be sold soon because the XV is my preferred camera. The XV's zoom lens performance is exemplary at all settings. I also use a D-Lux 5 as a back-up camera to the XV - the wider zoom is useful in some situations. You might consider trying an X-Vario before deciding whether to buy. Take a spare SD card to a dealer and try a demo model. dunk
spylaw4 Posted November 29, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 29, 2013 I have X2 and XV. The XV is used more often, but if I need a somewhat smaller lighter camera then the X2 does just fine, and I don't find the fixed focal length a problem. Both have excellent IQ. stuny Posted November 29, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 29, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Zachary - Welcome to the Forum. I used the XV for a few hours at the end of October and liked it a great deal. I have several cameras, one of which is the V Lux 4, and since getting it last December I've not used any of my other cameras (except for my underwater camera on a dive trip to Indonesia in September). I work in the MetLife Building (attached to Grand Central). If you'd like to walk about some trying my V Lux I'd be glad to meet you. stuart.nordheimer@opco.com. You might want to look at my site. The photo galleries from San Miguel de Allende at the beginning of November are all shot with the V Lux. www.barbara-and-stu.com
Rosebud55 Posted November 29, 2013 Share #8 Posted November 29, 2013 I would definitely recommend the xvario. I bought one a few months ago, took it to Portugal and the pics are just great. It's so good to use, I prefer it to my fuji xe1 :-) If you want to look at pics from the vario, check out Vic's xvario blog. Rosie
Guest Posted November 29, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 29, 2013 @zach welcome to the forum. I have the XVario since sept. 2013. my other cameras D-Lux 6 and V-Lux3. the XVario is absolutely the best camara in my dreamteam. use 1.) XVario 80%, 2.) D-Lux6 15% 3.) V-Lux3 max. 5%. my assessment: 1.) XVario = 100% 28mm* - 70mm - (*22mm with WWK Lumix LWA 52 x0,75) 2.) D-Lux 6 = 90% 24mm* - 90mm** (1/1,7"-sensor / *18 and 21mm with WWK / ** plus "i-zoom"- modus = 120mm / 135mm max 180mm.) 3.) V-Lux3 = 75% 24mm - 600mm (1/1,23 sensor WW f 2,8 - Tele f 5,2) 4.) V-Lux4 = 65/70% (dto sensor f 2,8 WW- Tele) best regards kmhb
zgisterak Posted November 29, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted November 29, 2013 Thank you all for your replies. Right now I am thinking about keeping X2 for it's fast lens and saving for Vario.

Zach I'm a new member, I got here because of the X Vario, my first Leica. I won't add much to what have been said above, I just want to tell you, that no words, no reviews, no feedbacks can do justice to the X Vario. Forget about specs and charts, this camera has an M built and an M IQ. proof to my words will be coming soon to this forum. Stay tuned.
