marcg Posted November 25, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) On an MM - I'd suddenly noticed that when you "play" the picture - it displays quickly and then after a very short lag the picture seems to grow slightly - or inflate. It happens whether the camera is recording in DNG, JPG or a mix of both. I'm sure that there is nothing wrong - but I am curious as to what is happening. Olyamk Posted November 25, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 25, 2013 Same behavior on M8.2 and on M9, so I think it's normal.
marcg Posted November 25, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted November 25, 2013 Thanks - yes I had no doubt that it was normal - but I have never seen it on any other camera and I was wondering what the process was
Olyamk Posted November 25, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 25, 2013 IMO, it looks as if the camera processor adds some sharpening to the playing picture.
marcg Posted November 25, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted November 25, 2013 No - sharpening is off
NikonJeff Posted November 25, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2013 Normal operation - same on my M9 as the MM. Nothing to see here - move along
marcg Posted November 25, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted November 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'd still like to know why
Olyamk Posted November 25, 2013 Share #8 Posted November 25, 2013 No - sharpening is off "Sharpening off" on camera seems affecting the OOC jpeg only.
marcg Posted November 25, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted November 25, 2013 Yes, I know - but I tried all permutations. Happens with DNG's as
NikonJeff Posted November 25, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 25, 2013 I'd still like to know why Because it's a slow processor in an 18mp camera - it reads a jpeg and "renders" it on the screen. Nothing more, nothing less. Happens with all permeations of files as far as I know, but I generally shoot DNG only. Happened with the M8 as well if my memory is correct. TomB_tx Posted November 25, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 25, 2013 The camera first displays an enlagement of the embedded "thumbnail" while it loads and processes the more detailed image. If you zoom in quickly you will see the blocky original thumbnail give way to the finer detail of the real image.
theno23 Posted November 25, 2013 Share #12 Posted November 25, 2013 It's the delay between in displaying the thumbnail preview image, and rendering a higher res preview from the full image data. The processor in the M9-era cameras is quite slow, so it takes a while.
