woorob Posted November 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) We had our first real snow last night and, as it was quite beautiful early this morning, I went out to shoot some pictures with my M (240) . I took a tripod, my 180 mm APO-R and my 2x APO extender. The ambient temperature was below 30°F (just below -1°C). I placed the EVF in the hot shoe, framed my first shot and pressed the shutter button. The camera locked up immediately, showing an error message in the EVF's screen, "Card Full." This could not possibly be the case since there were only about a dozen other exposures on my 64 GB card (a SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s). I tried to reformat the card in the camera, to no avail. The only way I could get the camera to clear the lockup was to remove battery for about a minute. I was then able to take some great shots. This is the second time I have encountered a lockup on this camera (which is virtually new, less than 500 activations). Significantly, both lockups have occurred at ambient temperatures far lower than 40° C. While high temperature may indeed be a contributing factor, high temperatures alone cannot be the only factor causing these lockups. Otherwise, the camera is truly fabulous. I'm obtaining the best image quality I've ever been able to get out of a digital camera, and I've owned, among others, the Nikon D800 and the Sony RX-1 (both fine cameras in their own right, just not up to the same standard as my M, IMO). The 180 mm APO f/2.8 is just stunning on this camera. Maybe I have an exceptionally fine specimen, but it is one of the finest lenses I've ever used. If there's any interest, I could post original DNG files for download and inspection. So, all in all, I'm quite happy with the camera even though I know that it is dogged by some electronic issues that should have been sorted out before the camera was put on the market. Hopefully, these issues, especially lockups with the EVP, can be rectified in a future firmware revision. I have encountered no issues of any kind with color calibration or white balance, but I do try to use the ColorChecker Passport color calibration system whenever I can. jaapv Posted November 6, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2013 This is not the same lockup, in that case the camera freezes with the review showing ( or a black screen). woorob Posted November 6, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted November 6, 2013 I forgot to mention that my first picture of the day was with the rangefinder, no EVF and no problem, so I think the issue must be EVF related (although it could certainly be a write error as well). I think somebody should mention that many other camera's also have this temperature range. I'm not sure how this helps, but I somehow feel this little known fact is particularly soothing for many people faced with a Leica M malfunction.
