Mark Pedley Posted November 5, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I removed a considerable amount of dust from behind the eyepiece of my MP (sn 3469045, purchased new end 2009). It was easy to do (three small screws, remove the eyepiece, blow away dust). The eyepiece came off easily, and there was no apparent sealing. The eyepiece does not fit flat on the body. There is a small gap at the left side where the body curves. I knew this, and expected dust at some point, however, I had read somewhere that the eyepiece is now sealed since a few years by the factory. One question. Is the "seal" something that can be retrofitted (ie a rubber ring seal), or is it a seal in the sense of a "glue" that needs to be applied before fitting the eyepiece? Thanks! 250swb Posted November 6, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2013 The improved sealing at the factory was done fairly soon after release, maybe 2004. It may not be dust getting in of course, it may be dust trying to get out. As a camera beds in and the shutter is used flakes of this or that can come off and end up in the viewfinder. Steve Thanks Steve. You are correct, indeed it may also have come from inside (between the rangefinder and the body). When I removed the eyepiece, I saw no evidence of sealing. The gap at the left of the eyepiece is "wide" open, and the eyepiece just slid off after removing the screws. I just contacted Leica. They said they use a lacquer around the eyepiece to seal it (there was no evidence of this on my camera). Anyway, no retrofit of a seal, but removing dust now and then is simple. I always thought removing the eyepiece exposes the inside of the rangefinder. It does not. The rangefinder seems to be a closed unit with a window immediately behind the eyepiece. So eyepiece dust removal really is trivial. Thanks! Mark
jrh68uk Posted November 7, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2013 How about when the dust is just behind the front window, though? I have a relatively large flake stuck onto the surface immediately behind the front VF window, which appeared after I bought the camera (used). I wish I could just unscrew something, blow it out, and screw back in, but I can't see how to get rid of it without removing the whole top plate. Which I'm not about to try. 250swb Posted November 7, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 7, 2013 Funny you should mention a large flake because mine went back to Solms for cleaning out exactly the same in the same place. My MP is one of the very first, so it wasn't dust as such, which the first cameras were prone to, but definitely something from the inside flaking off.
