Dan, regardless of the operational issues, the images themselves are quite good. I've been photographing classical musicians all my adult life, so I have some sense of the issues involved.

Something is not right about the lens focal length data in the EXIF, though. Most of the pictures in your flickr set say "21mm" when they appear to have been taken with something longer. And the last color shot of the audience says "90mm" when it appears to have been taken with something much shorter. Perhaps this is related to the lens recognition problems you mentioned.

The M240's image quality at ISO 3200 seems at least as good as Tri-X film pushed to 800. In the photo of the male cellist from the rear, I looked at the file in original size and could read all the notes, and see where the cello part of the "Figaro" overture differs from the bassoon part I've played. :) That's a reasonable amount of detail, I think!

Thanks Peter

I'm a bit forgetful about manually changing lens in the menu. I rarely remember to select the right lens. Ooooops. I've only got one 6bit coded lens. I'd love to have the rest of my lenses coded but fear it would cost to much.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm not a heavy or pro user but last week I noticed that my Leica flash wasn't syncing correctly, resulting in images only half exposed to flash. I was using 1/125s. Simply power cycling the camera resolved the problem. Weird. I've had one freeze and one mirror lock in 6 months, which was near the beginning. Overall I'm very pleased and happy. However I don't use it on critical paid jobs...

It sounds like this is something you should strongly consider after your experiences the other night... Seems a waste to spend so much on a body that can't recognise which lens is attached. Best of luck. If those pictures were from having a rough night, I'm looking forward to seeing more when you are kicking it!

Get a few more dry runs / volunteer events under your belt, which will allow you to get to learn the nuances of the equipment and how it functions, and your confidence will be greatly increased, in anticipation of your next paid event you plan to use the M for. It can be quite frustrating trying to figure out a new system / combo on-the-fly while under heavy pressure. Sounds like you underwent "trial by fire" but from the pics you were able to get, it looks like you did all right. :)

As far as the event not mattering just because it was a volunteer event, my recommendation is to always strive to do your best work - you never know who will be attending and what future business opportunities may pop up because your work resonates well with an attendee. Of course it is the paid engagements that put food on the table... Best wishes with your M.

With the lense id problems you described, perhaps this may be of help - I happened to notice it in the manual:

When using lenses without 6-bit coding, the identification function

must be deactivated to prevent malfunctions, or the lens type used

must be entered manually (see p. 162).
