Delcredere Posted November 11, 2013 Author Share #41 Posted November 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I arrived in London today and went to the Leica Mayfair store where I bought the M240. They were straight forward and most helpful - as I have always found them to be. They confirmed that the serial number of the camera. which was bought this July, was not on the list of cameras recalled because of the lug problem. So it is a new headache for them. Without quibbling they agreed to replace the camera with a new one as soon as possible and to repair the dinged R lens, the coating and paintwork of which was scratched, and to check out the optics. Here is the email I have just received from them with the serial numbers excised by me: "Thank you for your visit today, though we sincerely regret the circumstances. I write to confirm that both eyelets on your M Typ 240 (serial ...) have failed, and both the camera and your lens have suffered impact damage as a result. We therefore undertake replacement of your damaged products, or repair where replacement is not possible. The replacement camera will be supplied from new stock. Unfortunately, we do not have stock to provide you with the replacement camera immediately, and I’m sorry I can’t give you an estimated delivery at the moment. However please accept my personal assurance that one will be allocated to you from our next delivery, and I will advise as soon it becomes available. I will also update you weekly by email to provide any updated delivery information. With regard to your lens (Vario-Elmarit-R 28-70 f2.8-4.5 ASPH, serial ...), we are unable to replace this item as it is a discontinued product. We will therefore arrange a fast repair of your lens and will monitor progress and update you accordingly. Should we experience any problems with delay, such as parts out of stock, we will notify you immediately. We do not currently foresee any problems with delay. I hope this arrangements are suitable, but please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any concerns. Please find below my direct contact details. I look forward to contacting you as soon as possible with regard to the replacement camera. My colleague Ashna (copied) will monitor your repair and update you, but please feel free to contact me at any time. I’d like to express our sincere apologies for the distress and frustration caused to you by this matter, and to assure you that we will rectify the situation as soon as possible." Advertisement Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Hi Delcredere, Take a look here Strap lugs still an issue. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 11, 2013 Share #42 Posted November 11, 2013 Well, that sounds like as good as one could expect
dwbell Posted November 11, 2013 Share #43 Posted November 11, 2013 Well, that sounds like as good as one could expect I would expect the lugs not to fail in the first place. But I get your point and again dig your spin.
quadraticadder Posted November 11, 2013 Share #44 Posted November 11, 2013 Its indeed the best response you can expect. Unfortunately, If its allocated from the next shipment, then the others on waiting list will probably get bumped down by one, and the problem might reoccur with the new body they send you. The service department is doing the best they can, though, which is good. Was there any discussion about a loaner camera while you're waiting? Best, Steve

Guest Emile de Leon Posted November 12, 2013 Share #46 Posted November 12, 2013 Lets see... Because of Leicas manufacturing laziness ..for a 50 cent item.. Which should have been a non-issue on any cam of this price magnitude.. They will now give you back your lens repaired..that will never be the same again.. Wow.. They should have given you a choice between another lens of your choice in the same price range..or cash..or a fix if possible... up to the original condition before the cam failed.. Or should I say..Leica failed..
jaapv Posted November 12, 2013 Share #47 Posted November 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Which lens of choice ? There have been no R lenses manufactured for nearly a decade. And why should it never be the same? A lens restored by Leica CS is normally as good as new .
Frase Posted November 12, 2013 Share #48 Posted November 12, 2013 Maybe the problem is the size of lenses people are using on their Ms now with live view, I've seen lens mounts damaged on Nikon and Canons when the camera has a big lens on it and it is being carried with the camera strap and not the lens strap. Leica should have thought about this but I've always found the customer service very good and even though it can take a bit of time they always seem to get things fixed. jaapv Posted November 12, 2013 Share #49 Posted November 12, 2013 Heavy lenses are fitted with their own strap lugs. Having a 280/4.0 APO (not that heavy as long lenses go, but still..) on various R cameras I managed to bend the lens mount out of true a number of times despite using a second carrying strap. Guest borge Posted November 12, 2013 Share #50 Posted November 12, 2013 Lets see...They will now give you back your lens repaired..that will never be the same again.. Yes, it will be better!
algrove Posted November 12, 2013 Share #51 Posted November 12, 2013 Yes, it will be better! Well, I can tell you from recent experience it will not always be better. I got a lens back through Leica NJ that was a lug strap issue/lens damage and before shipping the lens blindly back to me Leica NJ checked it out. They could not mount it squarely on an M and it was front focusing so badly it was unusable. So back to Solms it went. Even Leica NJ was embarrassed for CS Solms and could not believe they even bothered to ship iy out in such a bad state of disrepair.
BerndReini Posted November 12, 2013 Share #52 Posted November 12, 2013 What a nightmare. I heard that Leica fired their last CEO because he didn't get along with the staff and technicians. Well, they wouldn't get along with me either if I was running the company because this kind of oversight is absolutely unacceptable for a company that is selling a luxury product at high prices based on tradition of quality. It makes me mad to hear this stuff. I don't care that this happens with other camera brands as well, it shouldn't happen with a Leica. We pay a lot of money for these products and we are very loyal to the brand. How does this happen? They implement a lot of new things in a camera, some of which have birthing problems as is to be expected, yet they mess up stuff that used to work on older generations? Why? Guest Emile de Leon Posted November 12, 2013 Share #53 Posted November 12, 2013 Good thing Leica is not in the auto business.. 300,00 cars recalled..the engines just blew up and fell out of the mount ..right on the highway.....they forgot to tighten the bolts right.. And your car crashed into a tree.. But have no fear..good ole Leica..will fix it up good as new...hahaha! Just send it in for a few weeks...hahahha! What a riot!! But I feel for the Leica owners..and don't mean to laugh at this..this is just astonishment speaking here.. If I owned a 7K Leica digital..and my Noct went to the pavement..because of Leicas incredible lack of anything resembling good quality control.. I would be ready to sue... And just because my Noct F1 is not being currently made..they better come up with something real to replace for full used replacement value..like cash..and then they can fix up the lens themselves..and sell it as a refurbished vintage in one of their posh Leica shops..maybe even put a red ribbon on it for a holiday sale...complete with Leica warranty..hahaha! I agree. That said, I was using a not very heavy or physically long R lens. And Leica have over a year ago announced an R to M adapter and encouraged people to buy the M240 on the basis that they will be able to use R lenses on it. So it is just not on for them to say "hold on old chap you had a heavy R lens on this"...

So it is just not on for them to say "hold on old chap you had a heavy R lens on this"... The onus is on the user. It's the Leica way. Use only certain sd cards. Format with SDformatter Don't shoot fast sequences of shots. Turn off and on, don't use auto off. Don't use auto ISO either while we're at it Don't shoot in hot temps... ....and in normal temps don't use the EVF. But hey, "they're trying really hard" and don't forget "it's great in classic RF mode" (except when bouncing off the pavement)
jdlaing Posted November 12, 2013 Share #56 Posted November 12, 2013 Gee. I use auto iso from time to time. I've used several kinds of SD cards. I don't use SD Formatter. I do not shoot fast sequences. I use auto off. I've shot in high temps. I don't have problems. The onus IS on the user. Leica is not in the auto business. They are in the lens and camera business. I have gotten used to the bore of carrying it about without a strap over my last two weeks in Namibia with either the R28-90 or R80-200 plus the APO extension tube.
