London dealer repairs?

Hi all,

First of all apologies if this has been discussed previously - I searched the forum but could not find anything.

I'm looking for recommendations for London based dealers who offer general servicing for my M9. I'm pretty sure the rangefinder is out and I know there is dust on the sensor.

So far I know that Aperture UK and Red Dot Cameras offer a general service and the price is the same.

Can anyone suggest alternatives or let me know experience of either of the above dealers? Concious that Red Dot appear to be an approved dealer so no idea if that means better results.

Kind regards

James

If it were me wanting a digital M serviced I would take it to a main dealer and expect them to send it back to Solms. But for a film M I'd send it to Malcolm Taylor. Personally I wouldn't trust any dealer that said they would do a service on a digital M 'in house'.

But generally for things like dust you could do it yourself, although if you send it for a service and checkup the sensor will be cleaned.

One word of caution, if you think your rangefinder is inaccurate, do not discount the idea that it may be your lens instead. If you can cross reference and decide that the camera is equally out with a number of lenses, then it probably is the body, if you only have one or two lenses it may be that it is the lens at fault. So Leica may ask for both body and lens be sent for a service to check both.

Re Sensor Clean...Leica in Mayfair will do this for free.....they probably offer a paid for service package as well.

Cheers

I'm afraid a sensor clean at Leica Mayfair has a listed cost, around £75 if i remember correctly.

I have had an M2 repaired and CLAed by Red Dot's repair man, not only was it excellent, but he replaced some other parts with better condition ones without me even asking, or charging.

Were my M9 not in Solms getting a new sensor for free, I would always go to Red Dot Cameras.

It does have a listed cost, but I've have it done for free before, if they're not busy, and it's not going to be a lot of work. The cleaning facilities are excellent.

I believe there has been a recent change of policy at Mayfair. I understand M sensor cleaning is free in-house.

Wonderful, but what about the poor sods who don't live on the doorstep? This is one service for Londoner's and another for everybody else!

I can appreciate if the free cleaning is for customers within the Passport period, but otherwise there is a question to be answered if all other dealers can't offer the same service.

I attended a function at Leica Mayfair 4 weeks ago and during their presentation we were advised that they offer free sensor cleaning for M cameras - subject to pre-booking. They do not offer same for compact cameras as they require dismantling and are sent to Solms.

If you own a digital camera you really should be able to clean a sensor. Often a rocket blower is sufficient.

Who takes their car back to the dealer to have the tyres pumped up for them?

Very true earleygallery. Perhaps you didn't see my comment about the possible need for calibrating the rangefinder.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

James

Mayfair cleaned my sensor for free, pre-booked, a couple of months ago, after my attempt at wet cleaning left too many smears.

Some time back I took my m9 to Mayfair for focus calibration checking; they checked the camera and lenses on the spot, and advised sending the body and 90mm to Solms for recalibration together, on the basis that focus calibration was less critical for wider lenses (35mm was my other) than longer ones.

I agree it's tough if you're not within easy commute of London - in both cases the conversations on the spot were extremely helpful.
