Hi,

Dagmar and myself have booked flights to Istanbul as well. We'll leave Hamburg/Germany on Wednesday Oct. 8th 11:30h with Turkish Airlines. We are going to stay until Oct. 15th / 15:30h.

No hotel booked yet.

Cheers,

Carsten & Dagmar

well, Dagmar has to defend her Bronze-Medal from the One-Challenge 2013:D:D:D

So she will have the alacarte X2 again? Maybe you should buy her a MM or M240 and she will go for gold Carsten!

Let me know where you are staying, there are many interesting hotels you can easily spot near the blue moskee at HRS.de, about 20 hotels within 200 meter

John

Fear not, drinkers! This from this article:

Hurriyet Daily News

The new law bans all retailers from selling alcoholic beverages at night, but not restaurants or other facilities. There are 200,000 small retailers that will be affected, according to official data.

That article is from September last year, but I think the clue was in the date in Satijntje's post.... April 1st ;)

As a fairly new member to this Forum, could someone please explain to me the nature of the "challenge"? As I live in California, I'm unlikely to make this one but, on the other hand, Istanbul is on my short-list of must-visit places, so maybe this is the well-thought out reason that I've been looking for :). Thanks for your help and advice.

jjohann,

Bill's post is correct but does not 'sell' the idea to you. ;) Ideally, you should arrive a day or two ahead of the Challenge. It is so called because you must declare your equipment to be used before starting. ie. One camera, one lens, one roll of film or digital equivalent (36 exp), from which you submit one image as your entry. You are allocated two hours (I think it should be one hour for consistency) in which to source a photograph. The challenge is not being allowed to change any of your gear even if it would suit your subject better.

So much for the competition. The real fun is meeting old and new faces in real time, eating, drinking at various locations. A highly social occasion. Istanbul is most worthy of allocating extra time. It has so much to offer that is new to our Western culture. Really exciting.

Please don't let me be the only long distance traveller. Surprise yourself and come. You will want to stay. The trick is to build one or several other destinations into your itinerary once you have spent the air fare.

Far too early for me to commit to going to Istanbul. I have many hurdles to negotiate between here and there.. But yes, I would probably be using the M9. However, I have now 'mastered' using the 111f and it will get a good airing wherever I go. It gives me more pleasure than any other camera.

For all of you reading up on Istanbul for the One Challenge in October, I'd like to share a link to the following article.

The New York Times - TRAVEL - JAN. 31, 2014

Orhan Pamuk’s Istanbul

By JOSHUA HAMMER

On a windswept afternoon in mid-December, the writer Orhan Pamuk stood in a leafy square around the corner from Istanbul University, absorbed in a 40-year-old memory. He walked past parked motorcycles, sturdy oaks and a stone fountain, browsing through secondhand books in front of cluttered shops occupying the bottom floors of a quadrangle of pale yellow buildings. Sahaflar Carsisi, Istanbul’s used-book bazaar, has been a magnet for literary types since the Byzantine era...............

Good weekend to all

Rick

Hotel booked today, we're staying at Hotel Amira.

The rooftop lounge seems to offer a rather scenic view and a "Complimentary 5 O'Clock Tea Buffet" is served by the hotel as well. :)

MM, M240 - one should consider a T-Model to go for gold. ;)

Annotation: Pete finished 3rd and Dagmar came in 4th, finally. Until the last vote, we've had 3 entries sharing 3rd place.

Cheers,

Carsten

Attention for Hotels and flights!!!

On the 10th October, there will be a EM qualifying football match between Turkey and the Czech Republic.

The match will be played in Turkey and it will be very likely that the match will be in Istanbul!

So arrange your hotels on time, and for those that will join the 1-Challenge from CZ, you will have 2 nice events in one go :-)

Just completed my Hotel reservation. Will be staying at the Amira as well. Seems to be one of the best hotels in IST at a reasonable price level.

If any of you will be arriving on the 10th as well and stay here also, we can ask to be picked up from ATATURK airport for a transfer to Hotel (35€).

Looking forward to meet you at this exiting place!

John
