David Alan Harvey with M8

Michael - I'm sure it's the 28 'cron. On film he shot a 35 1.4 ASPH on Velvia 50 (by street- or candlelight a lot of the time) so I'm sure he goes for all the aperture speed he can get, rather than compactness (not that the 'cron is all that big).

For the record, he's using the 28/2.8 elmarit ASPH. Has been since Novemeber last year when Leica loaned him the camera & lens. Anyone who's visited his blog & looked at the EXIF of his images can confirm this continues to be the case.

I think Charles posted this note because DAH has been shooting with Leicas for about 50 years running (since the age of 13). He holds the running record for most number of stories published in National Geographic magazine and almost all of them were made with only a 35mm leica lens. Pretty extraordinary... can't think of another famous photographer using the M8 now with this long a continuous legacy with the camera, coming from the one camera/one lens Leica M school as practised by Cartier Bresson in his day.

Something to think about as we lust after more glass.

On the subject of the lens, the smaller size & weight of the Elmart is very attractive, but decided for myself to stick with the VC 28/1.9. Found it worth putting up with the heft for the extra stop, less contrasty drawing & nicer bokeh.

Yo prav, good to see you here mate!! Festival of the Photograph in 08 baby!!

I was almost positive that he ( DAH ) has since bumped up the 28 to the cron given his need for speed.

I have had the M8 for 40 hours now, posted some pics in another thread from an assignment. I really like it, don't have focus issues with any of the lenses, even my 53 year old collapsable works beautifully on it. The 28 is the bomb lens for the M8!

I did goof up a battery though, pulled it from the charger prematurely when on the first charge cycle, used it for a quick task and out it back on. Now it will only indicate 1 bar but will last at least 200 shots..

Any ideas?

Regarding your battery - I had the same issue with a new one. I was advised to run it totally down a few time by turning "auto off" off and leaving the camera on till it fully drained. After about the third time through this process it has been perfect and always shows all bars when charged.

Good points all, Praveen.

Also in the one-camera-one-lens tradition (single-stroke M3+Canon Serenar), though shooting a less commercial style and perhaps less well known, is Henry Wessel (KQED Arts: Profile - Henry Wessel).

Photos in the new American Photography on the honor guard at Arlington. Pg 40 by David Alan Harvey says he works with M8 and one lens, a 28mm. I figured he would be an adopter of the M8 if anyone.

He also says he works with nikon but note this was c 2006 he has moved on :-) but Nikon aren't going change the web page are they ?

"Mostly I shoot with the D70," David says. "It's small, light and I've gotten excellent results. Right or wrong, I've got the feeling that if I can minimize the physical impact of the equipment, I'm better off."

As far as lenses, the story is the same: "I use the same lens I used when I was shooting film, the 20mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor. It's small and perfect for my style of working in close to people. I'll occasionally use the 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor." He says he's never used a zoom lens—"I like small and inconspicuous."

The basic kit, then, is the only kit. David might be adding to it soon, though. He's got his eye on a D200—"still small, still light, but a bigger file size."

Ah, well - I had a 50/50 chance of being right. Ironically, the one shot of his I pulled down to read the EXIF turned out to be a D70/50mm shot...
