Dr.KOL Posted October 15, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) In the back of my M (Type 240) is text "Leica Camera Made in Germany". When checking the X cameras, the text is "Leica Camera Germany". Leica does not claim that the camera would be made in Germany... Can anybody confirm that the X models are actually Made in Germany? Best, KOL

HarryW Posted October 15, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2013 Hi, There has been a number of questions in the past if the cameras were part assembled elsewhere however if you download Leica's Catalogue of X Range cameras it states quite clearly that both the X2 and X Vario are made in Germany. earleygallery Posted October 15, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 15, 2013 Indeed this has been covered before. I think that it's more accurate to say the camera is assembled in Germany. Clearly many of the components of the camera will be made in other countries, mostly the far east, then shipped to Leica for assembly. The 'Made in Germany' stamp can be used if a certain amount of work/value is added in that country.
euston Posted October 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 15, 2013 Can anybody confirm that the X models are actually Made in Germany? My X Vario has the words Made in Germany on its bottom plate. It probably means that the final assembly is performed in Germany. It doesn't mean that all the components are made there. I doubt whether you'll get an unequivocal answer from Leica, or an informed one from this forum, as to which components are made in the homeland. But good luck with your quest! What makes them Leica cameras, in my opinion, is that the bodies and lenses are designed by Leica and manufactured to its specifications and standards. Where they are manufactured is secondary. As far as I am concerned, the same goes for the digital M series.
dickgrafixstop Posted November 28, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 28, 2013 With multinational manufacturing run amuck, where is anything made. Component sourcing? Assembly operations? Quality inspections? Packaging? The only thing for certain is that Leica is a German company (so far) and they are concerned with minimizing manufacturing cost of goods sold. andybarton Posted November 28, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica cameras start their lives in The Portuguese factory ( unless they are the Panasonic ones). They're are then completed in Germany, sufficiently to allow "Made in Germany" to be on them. M cameras are substantially built in Portugal before final assembly in Solms. Yes ... which probably explains why the XV was available from launch day 1 at every Leica Premier dealer. And the lens is a Leica design rather than a PanaLeica collaboration. When the new Wetzlar factory is operational and receiving visitors we will have a better insight into Leica's manufacturing. Actual production will be in totally dust free areas - but visitors will be able to see into the 'bubbled' zones. dunk
