Gracie, Ezio. My Italian was never good, but I think you suggested a B&W version, which I have and will share a little later on and would love to hear which version is more appealing (if any!). Ciao, Adam

Here's a gritty B&W version. I personally favor the color.

Hi Adam,

Lovely photo - I particularly like the composition.

What this image shows is that colour really works when it is controlled - the prevailing colour is the stone of the buildings and the street, with only the boys' clothing and the red balloons standing out.

The image doesn't work so well in B&W because the background of the boy with his arms in the air is too busy. There is not enough subject isolation in the B&W image to give it strength. It is one of the biggest struggles I have with composition - getting caught out by the background.

I really like the colour version.

Cheers

John

Hi John and thanks for your kind and thoughtful remarks. I agree 100% on your take of the color version. In this image, as with most of my other keepers from the old markets and neighborhoods in Jerusalem, the color schemes and tones of the surrounding buildings help make the picture. The objects in the pictures, in this case the boys, are not prominent enough to strip the picture of the colors and retain the effectiveness. And the M9 does such a nice job with the colors. :). All the best and look forward to sharing a few more in due course. Adam

Many thanks, Stuart and Lee for your comments.

And thanks, Ezio, for your time with my picture. I do agree that less contrast is better here. and you have improved the B&W version materially, IMHO.

That said, I still favour the colour version, for the reasons articulated above.

I think that when HCB referred to colour film as "disgusting," he was not referring to scenes like this. There is no "decisive moment" in my picture. It is simply a snapshot of a very charming and old world setting, the authenticity of which I found interesting in these modern times. A memory that I want to incapsulate and go back to from time to time. To me, the colours and tones in the stones are needed to completely portray this charm. Just my interpretation....

Thanks again!
