Philjh Posted October 11, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) These marks appeared on my sensor recently. Not caused by cleaning. They look like scratches but I have no idea how they happened. Could some debris have got behind the shutter? The marks are very uniform. My dealer will be sending the camera to Solms, I guess it will need a new sensor. Has anyone any ideas how this could happen? Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Hi Philjh, Take a look here M-E Sensor Damage. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tobey bilek Posted October 11, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2013 stuck the rocket blower nozzle in to far? Came from the factory that way and you just now noticed it. Something was dragged across the sensor that should not have touched it.
earleygallery Posted October 11, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2013 Odd. The two strokes are not exactly in line, so it's not one scratch as such, it's been marked twice. Did these show up on previous images? Are you certain it's not hairs on the sensor? Have you tried cleaning the sensor?
250swb Posted October 12, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2013 It is actually quite hard to casually scratch glass, the sensor covering, so cleaning it would have been the simplest thing to try before sending it to Solms. Given M9/M-E sensors spit oil and bits onto the sensor when new it's most likely to be loose debris or streaks of oil. Steve
Philjh Posted October 12, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted October 12, 2013 I used a Visible Dust swab with Sensor Kleen fluid and Dust Aid sticky pad to no avail. I thought it might be a hair but when you look at the sensor it does seem scratched. My worry is that it is a sensor fault that may get worse so it seems best to get it checked out. My dealer reckons it'll be repaired under the Passport warranty. The M-E will be in Solms on Tuesday for surgery. It was quite hard to part with the camera. earleygallery Posted October 12, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 12, 2013 Passport covers any faults/damage so you should be fine. I'd just be worried how this happened ?
sblutter Posted October 13, 2013 Share #7 Posted October 13, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had similar and tried a 'Lenspen', thinking its going back anyway Went very carefully - erased the smudge. Also lifted off a very stubborn shard of metal with no damage And then I exhaled...
250swb Posted October 14, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 14, 2013 I used a Visible Dust swab with Sensor Kleen fluid..... If it is a simple streak of oil you need Visible Dust 'Smear Away'. 'Sensor Clean' is for general cleaning and will not work on oil. Steve
Philjh Posted October 16, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted October 16, 2013 Thanks for your posts. Hopefully Solms will clear up the mystery. I will report back when the camera is returned.
Philjh Posted November 7, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted November 7, 2013 I heard today that Solms are replacing the sensor, no other details. Well I've joined the replaced Leica sensor owner club, somehow I knew I'd be getting a new sensor at some point but after 6 months ownership is a bit soon. Still I knew what I was taking on when I bought the M-E and wouldn't be without it, except when it's in Solms!!
