The WATE 16-18-21 is one of my all-time favorite lenses.

Well, let's see. I use it, here we go, on these cameras:

M9, NEX-5N, NEX-7, OM-D E-M5, OM-D E-M1, and hopefully soon on an FF NEX? :D

With those cameras of crop factors 1x, 1.5x and 2x the WATE feels like 6 lenses in one!

Are they rare?

I can get a new one.

I don't think they are rare. I checked at couple of US dealers and all have them in stock. What I didn't find was that someone was selling it without the Mr. F, though.

If you check, most of the stores have almost, if not all lenses in stock at the moment, the exeption being 50mm APO.

How good is this lens. Need something wider than my 35 lux and felt that a fixed 18 or 21 would restrict me a little.

any experience?

Very fine lense, but f 4.0 is another kind of restriction.

I used this lens on a Leica Workshop and it was truly wonderful, got some cracking street pics.

I'm not a wide angle user, but if I was the Wate would be top of the list.

There is a dealer in north Scotland who has 4 used Wates!

Two useful aspects of the WATE: Although not advertised as such it behaves as a zoom lens and you can choose any focal length between 16 and 21mm also it appears to be parfocal so you don't have to refocus as you zoom. A very nice lens on the M(240).

If someone had both and would be willing to make a comparison shoots at 21mm I'd be greatly thankful.

Seeing those two photos one next to the other, center and corner crops of the same scene, would be the best way to make a decision.

Its a great lens in terms of being compact, good resolution and other IQ parameters , but has two small drawbacks: The f/4 as largest aperture making it less suitable for night photography together with M because of the restriction in exposure time of M. And secondly some small distortion. The latter can be corrected in SW, but I have not found any tools with built-in profile to correct this. I know that one can download free the Adobe tool to generate your own profile, but I have been to lazy to do this since it involves some work. This should also indicate that the distortion is not to serious.

Great lens but has quite a bit of moustache distortion if you shoot architecture though this can be sorted in PTL lens

Thank you for this pointing to this tool. But according to their site no Leica lenses are supported? If you need to make create your own profile you might as well use Lightroom?
