mirekti Posted October 8, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 8, 2013 Is there a place one could buy it new, but without Mr. Franky? I'm still in a doubt to go 21 sem and 12 CV or Tri-Elmar way... Any rumors about new Leica ultra wide lenses?
Edward77 Posted October 8, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted October 8, 2013 Are they rare? I can get a new one.

This is one of Leica's best lenses if you are a photographer.
Ecar Posted October 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 8, 2013 A fantastic lens - even more so on the M240. It's larger (and more expensive) than a fixed prime. That's the price you pay for versatility.
k-hawinkler Posted October 8, 2013 Share #7 Posted October 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The WATE 16-18-21 is one of my all-time favorite lenses. Well, let's see. I use it, here we go, on these cameras: M9, NEX-5N, NEX-7, OM-D E-M5, OM-D E-M1, and hopefully soon on an FF NEX? With those cameras of crop factors 1x, 1.5x and 2x the WATE feels like 6 lenses in one!
gabriel Posted October 8, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 8, 2013 On the Leica price list this lens is listed both with and without the Frankenfinder so any Leica dealer should be able to supply the lens without the finder
mirekti Posted October 8, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 8, 2013 Are they rare? I can get a new one. I don't think they are rare. I checked at couple of US dealers and all have them in stock. What I didn't find was that someone was selling it without the Mr. F, though. If you check, most of the stores have almost, if not all lenses in stock at the moment, the exeption being 50mm APO. algrove Posted October 8, 2013 Share #10 Posted October 8, 2013 Maybe with the M the F finder is not so necessary, but then you probably will have to use LV instead of RF. Although as an owner of the 21/3.4 SEM, one can easily enjoy that lens too.
akiralx Posted October 9, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 9, 2013 Maybe with the M the F finder is not so necessary, but then you probably will have to use LV instead of RF. Agreed - with the M9 or MM the F-finder is strongly recommended. It is a pleasure to use.

Very fine lense, but f 4.0 is another kind of restriction.
Philjh Posted October 12, 2013 Share #15 Posted October 12, 2013 I used this lens on a Leica Workshop and it was truly wonderful, got some cracking street pics. I'm not a wide angle user, but if I was the Wate would be top of the list. There is a dealer in north Scotland who has 4 used Wates!
gravastar Posted October 12, 2013 Share #16 Posted October 12, 2013 Two useful aspects of the WATE: Although not advertised as such it behaves as a zoom lens and you can choose any focal length between 16 and 21mm also it appears to be parfocal so you don't have to refocus as you zoom. A very nice lens on the M(240). Bob.
mirekti Posted October 12, 2013 Share #17 Posted October 12, 2013 If someone had both and would be willing to make a comparison shoots at 21mm I'd be greatly thankful. Seeing those two photos one next to the other, center and corner crops of the same scene, would be the best way to make a decision.
viramati Posted October 12, 2013 Share #18 Posted October 12, 2013 Great lens but has quite a bit of moustache distortion if you shoot architecture though this can be sorted in PTL lens

flyalf Posted October 13, 2013 Share #20 Posted October 13, 2013 How good is this lens. Need something wider than my 35 lux and felt that a fixed 18 or 21 would restrict me a little. any experience? Its a great lens in terms of being compact, good resolution and other IQ parameters , but has two small drawbacks: The f/4 as largest aperture making it less suitable for night photography together with M because of the restriction in exposure time of M. And secondly some small distortion. The latter can be corrected in SW, but I have not found any tools with built-in profile to correct this. I know that one can download free the Adobe tool to generate your own profile, but I have been to lazy to do this since it involves some work. This should also indicate that the distortion is not to serious. Great lens but has quite a bit of moustache distortion if you shoot architecture though this can be sorted in PTL lens Thank you for this pointing to this tool. But according to their site no Leica lenses are supported? If you need to make create your own profile you might as well use Lightroom?
