Following Jaap's valuable suggestion for printing MM files on Canson Bayrta Photographique, I have started using it for everything.... But I stick with the R3000 borderless because I do not see 1:1.5 paper in sizes larger then 13x 19. What have I missed? Thx, Peter Depends on the project really but my lab prints up to 120 inches on Fuji Crystal Archive, Kodak Endura, Duratrans, Ilfobrom Gallerie FB or ILford RC printed by Lightjet. k-hawinkler Posted December 2, 2013 Share #3204 Posted December 2, 2013 My guess is that Sony has intentionally crippled third party lenses by using a thicker filter. Why would they not? I had suspected they would do something like this from the beginning to make you buy their lenses designed with the entire sensor module in mind. Do some peeping and you may be surprised at the sharpness wide open. you can find more samples in the same set. I see it begins to seep in here that the Sony performance is unmatched by Leica with some lenses, while inferior to Leica with others: though it should be said the A7r has superior central IQ nearly with all M lenses. Sony rendering is beautiful.... . Yes it is very sharp at F1.2 indeed. But now that we are looking at 36MP images at 100% we also clearly see how paper thin the DOF is. Just from practical experience on the M240 I've not been at f/1.4 as much as with the M9. Now with the Zeiss 35 on the A7R I'm not missing f/2 to be honest and the shutter is up at 1/250 mostly. On very high res cameras I really wonder what the utility is of fast lenses except for some special purposes since many people will just see the image as being un-sharrp.. Not everybody appreciates "beautiful bokeh." And if you are not going to use the image real large, a lower res camera will suffice. On 4x5 I generally was at F16-F32 and could have had shallow depth of field quite easily, but didn't go that route very often. I think there is now a dichotomy between using 35mm as a fast expressive camera and using it like a hand held view camera. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've been thinking exactly the same thing as I've been looking at some of the samples I've been shooting, the DOF is extremely thin. Peeping has evolved I give you that. 50Lux at f/1.4 @ 3 meters will have identical DOF on 135 film, M9 and A7r. Obviously rendering will vary. For instance as technology evolves, I can see a system that shoots two images in rapid succession... one wide open and one stopped down a lot. These could be stored in a single file and you adjust the sharpness falloff selectively in post. It is similar to focus stacking and some HDR techniques. This certainly is doable today when working on a tripod shooting still objects. I probably won't have time to really shoot this little beast until the weekend. Also, the box isn't half bad either. Certainly not up to Leica collector status, but functional.
