It's a good point about the nose. I hope that it's as small an offset to the left edge as it looks in pictures where so some has it in their hand. It looks to me like my nose could go left of body comfortably. We'll see. The m240 EVF nose concern is a nightmare. Right in the optical viewfinder window!

It is possible for you to resolve this. Wait until the cameras are in stock at a local dealer and compare focus speed for yourself. ........

This is a good piece of advice in principle, but my local dealer is 250 miles away so I may well ask a few more daft questions before I'm able to test anything out for myself!

But I do take your point. Thank you. :)

.............

Rich did you notice any problem with the nose hitting the LCD? ........

I don't know what the problem is.

Hilarious.

Did you actually do a search for that photo? You officially have way too much time on your hands.

It doesn't really accurately represent the problem I have actually encountered in real world photographic situations, but, whatever.

Maybe a bit of a down in the weeds issue that most folks are not interested in but I have been surprised to find from both the manual and internet searching that the Auto ISO on this camera is not configurable i.e. min shutter speed etc.

On a related note though it does seem from the manual that its possible to put the camera in manual mode + Auto ISO and then shift the ISO via the Exposure compensation dial. Never tried that on a camera before, would be a different way of working but sounds pretty powerful.

As reported on Fredmiranda.com, in the Official A7 and A7r thread,

the cameras may have been released to the Korean market:

And Leica still can't meet the demand for the Pre-orders for the M240 :(

Rich

That's why Sony will get my money and not Leica.

First paragraph would be very disappointing if true.

Second paragraph - FINALLY a manufacturer is actually thinking ahead! Bravo, bravo! Not long until it's "ISO ? What's that?"

Not so on the NEX 6. AUTO ISO is only available in Programmable modes.

A bigger question is why would you want AUTO ISO in Manual mode? To control everything EXCEPT the ISO? Sounds dangerous.

Not at all. When ISO is practically noise free up to 3200 (6400?) you can set shutter for motion or hand shake blur (2x focal min at 36mp), set aperture for creative reasons and still cover a huge range of exposure with ISO shooting up and down as required.

In this mode I ride my aperture ring based on distance, sure at 2m my 50lux will give me a sharp face, but in closer I need to be up at 2.8 to avoid 'only sharp eyes', shutter is set, ISO is riding as required. Brilliant. New school for sure, many film shooters can't let go of ISO not being fixed.

It was on the footnotes to the table on page 68 of the user manual. It says the following "When the shooting mode is set to M, the exposure can be adjusted only

when [iSO] is set to [iSO AUTO]". ISTR reading you could do similar on the RX-1. The footnote is against an entry made in the column for Exposure Compensation btw.

I couldn't find Auto ISO configuration anywhere in the manual just the ability to turn it on or not.

While I prefer to shoot at ISO's of 100-200-400 when I can get ETTR, (using f2 and f2.8) I wont go up above ISO 1600 on the NEX 6 body, and if I absolutely need to, underexpose a stop or two at 1600. Then I like to let Lightroom get those last stops of information out of the 1600 ISO files at a later time. It's way easier for me personally to get my mind around. Just my opinion, The NEX 6 has far too much Color noise above that setting of ISO 1600, for my taste. Sony A7 ARW files may be completely different.

This method works well on the RX-1 for me. So why would it not work well on the A7r?

I'd like to know your opinion on what seems to be a major flaw in the A7/7R that may prevent me from buying one.

I own an M, so the reasons why the A7R might be interesting are simply these:

1 - Higher resolution may be an advantage in a few situations.

2- A very effective autofocus system may be helpful in a some situations.

3- It is nice to think that there's a relatively low-cost way to have a second M-lens-compatible digital body that will perform as well as my M whilst also being lighter to carry.

This is the problem though: it seems that Sony have not been able to combine their most effective AF system with their highest resolution sensor, so the first two and the most important features on my list are incompatible, leaving me thinking, as we often have done with Leica releases, that this camera is a stepping-stone to one model that will offer a combination of the best features already in existence.

Is this a reasonable conclusion?

Peter,

This is exactly my thought process. I will not likely add the A7 or A7r until I see and have the opportunity to work with some real raw files using a wide range of M lenses and until I see that the auto-focus performs better than what the current reviews are reporting.

Wait and see is the order of the day for me.

KDR.

I assumed (apparently erroneously) this is how Exp Comp worked when in manual mode w ISO set to auto- at least in theory since I shoot manual and don't use Exp Comp.
