You should check out the M240 part of the site for more of the same - not happy photographers.

That camera has some MAJOR issues, including locking and having to remove the battery. Remote the battery. Again. (repeat)

Leica are not the camera company it once was.

Service? Forget it, they tell the M240 owners they have "never seen this problem before" or such like.

An absolute pile of poo I'm sorry to report.

I think your hyperbole is an absolute pile of poo.

Not to diminish the distress of some, but I'm totally delighted with my M240 and S2, with no issues other than the S2's faded OLED replacement. These have both been solid, reliable, and clearly well-made, and I expect they will serve me well for quite a long time. Leica's service has been excellent and swift.

The M240 has more issues than any camera I have every experienced and you only need read the M240 part of this site.

Don't be so myopic Mark, I know you reside there also.

Just scroll down through the disgruntled Topics to better gauge just how cheesed of many are. Seriously cheesed off.

Are Leica interested? Listening?

Pah!

You never had that before the digital age I can promise you that pal!

In today's (London) Observer no less a photographer than Rankin says the Leica-S system "is now my preferred camera; it's easier to use, the lenses are the best in the world and the file sizes and detail are closer to medium format than a 35mm. They're just the best for what they are."

This was in the Tech Monthly section where specialists choose their top technical equipment.

You haven't been around the forum very long. The M8 had its well documented issues, and the M9 had more issues than the new M, including initial color concerns (just as robust as for the M), cracked sensors, red edge problems, SD card compatibility failures, buffer issues, discreet mode faults (still not fixed), etc.

Every first generation digital M launch has been similar. But folks here have short memories, and this too will pass eventually for the new M. FW updates and/or new model iterations will provide fixes and improvements, and in a few years a bunch of folks will likely speak fondly about their aging M 240s.

Then some new forum member will complain about the M (typ 600), and you can post about how things haven't changed much. That is, if Leica is still able to compete.

How big an "if" is that going to be. Their bread and butter system is the M and it was a shame while many waited for their M's to arrive they launched the Vario with stock in just about every store. Meanwhile R-M adapters are no where to be seen in 14 months from announcement and Varios are still in stock in just about every store.

Strange priorities.

Nothing strange about no Leica branded R-M adapter availability.

These adapters are readily available on the market and as the highest priced of them have a quality on par with what Leica would market, there simply is absolutely no reason for a manufacturer to tool up for such a product.

S camera and lenses is the best camera system ever. Period.

Some see the M8 as a flawed camera, other have been using it since today.

I never understood why the M9 or new M or S should be a flawed camera. Just because some people have had some technical issues with some cameras? Not different from other brands. And never forget the other 95 percent of photographers who are not posting in inter forums but just use the equipment.

  • 2 weeks later...

Leica seems to be a lightening rod for disgruntled users.

Nothing odd about this ... people that pay a premium are often more vocal than those who do not pay a premium. It has to do with heightened expectations and deeper disappointment when all is not well.

One can have issues with any premium product, and if not treated well, or disenfranchised by someone in the manufacture's response chain, can swiftly become a detractor. We all have some sense of entitlement ... some more than others as I have experienced first hand from clients in my photographic business.

I've been working with a S2 now for some years. Prior to, or concurrent with that, a string of Hasselblad V and H cameras culminating with a H4D/60. I've also used a Mamiya RZ and 645AFD-II with a Leaf Aptus 75s back.

All of them had their issues from time to time. No need to line-list each one. How the dealer or manufacturer responded had a lot to do with impressions of the gear itself. My S2 had its' share of issues, but was swiftly attended to by Kelsey Fain of Leica USA. Knowledgable. No nonsense. Fast.

Is the S2 a big 35mm? Is it a smaller MFD? Is it "no man's land"? Who really cares? It is a camera, What it produces is all that counts. Other obsessions are best left to the obsessed.

My Hasselblads were limited to 1/800 shutter, the S2 is not. The S2 with CS lenses can sync to 1/1000 ... or can be used to 1/4000, including when used with some H lenses like the HC-100/2.2, something I could never do with the H cameras. Sync with the Mamiya 645 was 1/125.

37 meg from a larger sensor is not the same as 36 meg from a smaller sensor (I have both). Trying to explain that to some disbelievers is a waste of time ... let them believe what ever they want.

People that first looked at a S2 or S, then selected a M240 seem confused as to their own personal creative purpose. Those two cameras are incredibly different is almost every way.

With the S2/S Leica made an eminently easy camera to use. Simple. Elegant. More versatile in the sphere of MFD choices. Faster than most. Lenses like no other, as is their habit. Very little it cannot do. For what it cannot, there are rental selects to flesh it out ... selections that are usually quite specialized and cannot do much of what the S2/S can.

Best all around camera I've ever used. Doesn't matter what came before. Doesn't matter what may come next. It does what I expected, and has earned its' keep. IMO, when you get this far up the imaging food chain, digital obsolesce is a state of mind, not a true state of the art. That part is the photographer's domain.

A7 might be called 'in the M ballpark' but I find them 2 whole different cammera's like comparing a S with a Mamiya RZ33, yes it can do the same, but at the same time it can't...

I will for now stay with Leica M, and I love my M240...

Seems you may have misinterpreted my post. I'm among the happy users, still, of the M8.2, and also happily using the new M, despite its 'teething' issues. My point was that Leica consistently has had issues at launch of its digital gear (M and S), regarding product availability (S lenses, for instance) and/or teething issues I cited.

This is no indictment of the gear overall...I own it and use it...but I also recognize the company's need to improve its QC and distribution at launch. I don't consider the products flawed...either they suit the user's needs and preferences or not. For me, they do, although I don't own the S since I would use it for landscape work, and for that I would prefer live view.
