tanya_alexis Posted September 30, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted September 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased a 40mm Summicron lens, but it didn't come with a lens cap. I am having a hard time looking into finding one. Â Does anyone have any suggestions? It does not have to be an official leica lens cap. I just want to be able to proctect my lens. Â Thank you! Michael Geschlecht Posted October 1, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Hello Tanya_Alexis, Â Welcome to the Forum. Â What is the outside diameter of the lens in millimeters? Or in inches if you have nothing to measure millimeters with? Â There should be something available. Â In the mean time: Why don't you use a piece of thicker plastic cut from a baggie held in place with a not too tight rubber band? Â Hopefully you already have or are also looking for a rigid lens shade. More for protection from inadvertant impact or damage than for flare protection. Â A proper rigid lens shade can sometimes offer the same or more protection than a proper lens cap can. Â Unfortunately, this is 1 of the lenses that Leitz only made a soft rubber lens shade for: 12518. Â The filter size is Series Size 5.5 which is a 36mm unthreaded filter held in place by the aforementioned lens shade which screws into the lens. Â The rear cap is the same standard 14051 used by other M lenses without protruding rear elements. Â The Leitz front cap is the same 14191 that fits the companion 90mm Elmar-C. Â Best Regards, Â Michael
plewislambert Posted October 1, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Surely a 39mm cap fits the filter thread? It certainly does on my 40mm Summicron. I just took the rubber lenshood off as it was splitting and fitted the cap into the filter thread. Realistically I doubt I shall use a cap as I bought a 39mm metal hood with cut-outs which will be left permanently on. The inner diameter of the front of the hood is 46mm and so far I found no cap this size. Not so.... I just found some that might suit. Philip:)
pop Posted October 1, 2013 Share #4  Posted October 1, 2013 Mine says 14 191 (presumably the part number) and ∅ 35,5 which I take to mean the diameter. However, it attaches to the rubber lens hood and will not attach to the lens without that hood.
tanya_alexis Posted October 1, 2013 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 1, 2013 Thank you for all of your responses. I have a feeling this is going to be a very helpful forum. Â Michael, thank you so much for your incredibly thorough response. I was actually thinking of use a thick piece of plastic and a loose rubber band, and since you have seconded that, I have a feeling that may be my temporary solution. Â Very happy to be a part of such an informative forum! Â Thank you!
algrove Posted October 2, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted October 2, 2013 Welcome to the Forum I wanted to preserve my original rubber lens hood and cap that goes with the lens so I ordered a cheap metal hood for like $5.00. Â I have a small ring that that screws into the lens and reads E39-S5.5 (can't remember where I got it) and then a 39mm metal hood screws into that ring. Nice setup for an old lens. Nice setup for an old lens.  You probably got it here, as I did, and for the same reason: New Metal Hood for Leica Summicron C S5 5 40mm F 2 0 | eBay  A bit more than 5$, though - but add a 1$ cap and you're all set. graphlex Posted January 10, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted January 10, 2014 As I recall, there was a posting on this forum in the last year or two mentioning that the Leica Store in Mayfair still stocks the original lens cap for the 40 mm Summicron as a new item. The cap only works (and works very nicely) with the original hood for this lens.
jaapv Posted January 10, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted January 10, 2014 The new type 39 mm clip-in cap fits well.
magosak Posted July 23, 2014 Share #10 Â Posted July 23, 2014 40mm Summicron-c is one of my favourite lenses. I have the circular vented hood from heavystar with the thread adapter but I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get a rectangular hood for this lens. I've read that there used to be a ebay seller (redleica1) selling such a hood some years ago. Unfortunately I was not able to find much information about it and my email to this seller was not answered.
jaapv Posted July 23, 2014 Share #11 Â Posted July 23, 2014 There is no Leica rectangular hood for this lens. The original rubber hood and lens cap are still easiliy available of eBay, sometimes even as new-old stock.
steve kessel Posted July 24, 2014 Share #12  Posted July 24, 2014 The new type 39 mm clip-in cap fits well.  Jaap  Do you mean fitting a cap without the hood? I was looking for a cap as well but I'd like to keep the hood on.  Ivor at Reddot Cameras kindly gave me a 51mm cap yesterday which could work with a bit of modification.  Best wishes  Steve
jaapv Posted July 24, 2014 Share #13 Â Posted July 24, 2014 The original lens cap is a unit with the hood. For the lens alone you can use a 39 mm click-in cap.

I have the rubber hood and also the metal vented circular hood by heavystar. I was wondering if anybody is aware of any third-party rectangular hood similar to the one supplied by redleica1. Another alternative I came across is to modify a Leica 12526 as described here. I think I will pursue this last option as soon as I get my hands on a 12526. magosak Posted July 24, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted July 24, 2014 Here are a few options for 40c. Â Left: The vented hood, 52mm cap for the hood and E39-S5.5 thread adapter - all from heavystar. Lens hood and the cap can be purchased for less from other sellers but I didn't see anybody else selling the thread adapter. Middle: Original rubber Leica hood and the clip-on cap (35.5mm, clips on the hood only not the lens). Right: Generic 39mm push-button clip-on cap.
