I have just received the new Leica C for evaluation and I think it will be a winner. My initial views are here on Macfilos/photo.

Still, with a price differential of 599 Euro against 359 Euro for the identical Panasonic, I fear the market will be limited to Leica freaks and posers.

Provocation! As you know there is an economic argument to be made, including Leica Passport, Lightroom and higher resale value, quite apart from the more attractive appearance. This narrows the financial gap considerably, but there is more to it than that. Sales will go to existing Leica owners, I imagine, but there is clearly a marker out there. Dealers are reporting brisk sales.

:D Passport is only in the UK, and most Leica owners have plenty of editing software. I as one Leica geek got the Panasonic....

Yes I was at Leica Mayfair yesterday and until then had not realised that LP was a UK-only initiative. I wonder why. All other considerations apart, what do you think about the LF1? I would value your opinion. So far I am pretty impressed. I would judge the IQ is slightly inferior to that in the LX7, but I like the extra zoom range. And I am a fan of the EVF, poor as it is in comparison eight bigger and brighter offerings on larger cameras.

The deal-breaker for me is the lack of an all black version.

As a result I'll probably buy the Panasonic version [when the price drops, which it will] cover up the gopping Pana logos n graphics with tape and use it until it breaks..

Unless the Leica C Type smokes the Pana for IQ, which is unlikely. in the past I have always noticed slightly better image quality with the Leicas. LX3, for instance, had a slightly more "digital" look compared to the DLux 4 I had. But I don't want to stir up that hornets nest!

No black, no sale.

I would normally agree with you. While white/gold version is horrible (but will have its fans) I really do like the (very) dark red and black. Only problem is that I cannot lay hands on a matching roll of dark red gaffer tape to cover the red dot!

Look very closely at OP's picture. The new C is predominantly 'black'. Forget the Leica description of body colour. And welcome to the forum!

Guess I would just use black gaffer tape, it's close enough. Still hoping to check one out. Debating between the C or the LF1.

As jaapv points out, the Panasonic LF1 is cheaper and is essentially the same camera. I would be surprised if there is a jot of difference in the IQ, although the firmware is changed to amend the menu if nothing else. It all boils down to preference. If you prefer the appearance of the C and want to have the Leica brand, which includes excellent after-sales service for years to come, then you can make a good case for paying the extra. You will certainly be able to sell the C secondhand through a Leica dealer and will probably get enough back to compensate for the additional cost of the C over the LF1. You will be pleased with either the LF1 or the Leica C, but I am certain you will get more pleasure of ownership from the Leica.

Leica have admitted (in Amateur Photographer magazine) that the changes between the Panasonic an Leica versions are cosmetic, the image making parts of the cameras are identical.

If you need the software the additional premium for the Leica version is worth it IMHO for the better after sales support, and yes, the badge!

Thanks for this confirmation. I hadn't seen the piece in AP but will look it up. This is not at all surprising. The menu has been changed, if only to add the Leica dot on the closing screen, but I haven't been able to check detail. As you say, the extras and the better design help close the gap between the C and the Leica. Here in the UK it makes even more sense because of the one-year Leica Passport accidental damage insurance. There is also a one-hour training course at Leica Mayfair.
