Rick Posted November 12, 2013 Share #21 Posted November 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jip, It does not seem to affect all cameras. I would therefore call the camera defective and would send it back if it bothers you. Leica has directed me to send mine in to be inspected. They feel it is not common. The sound doesn't seem to be heard when using the external stereo mic so, that might be a solution. Rick
Advertisement Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Hi Rick, Take a look here Strange sound when recording video on the M. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bideford Posted November 12, 2013 Share #22 Posted November 12, 2013 I have the same noise. Do not use video so I'll see what transpires here and if need be send mine in later when turn around is likely to be shorter! James

quadraticadder Posted November 12, 2013 Share #24 Posted November 12, 2013 It seems that all M240's do this, then. Is there anyone's that does not (without needing a hearing aid to listen, assuming that poster was not joking)? Best, Steve

Peace.I asked if anyone's does not do this. I would like to hear from them, please. Best, Steve I also suspect they all do it I certainly can't know if they all do it. Leica seems to think it is just a couple of cameras... which means that the ones that do it are not the norm and must be defective... I'm sending mine back to be fixed. bideford Posted November 18, 2013 Share #29 Posted November 18, 2013 Tried the movie thingy again last night - and strangely no beep sounds this time. Perhaps the camera was picking up some interference from some other electronic device (mobile etc..)?
wlaidlaw Posted November 21, 2013 Share #30 Posted November 21, 2013 Tried the movie thingy again last night - and strangely no beep sounds this time. Perhaps the camera was picking up some interference from some other electronic device (mobile etc..)? I wonder if you have got the answer. I am sure we all remember the early days when GSM phones first replaced cell analogue and we were all getting dit, dit-dit-dit, dit-da-da-da noises on our car radios every few minutes as the cell phones “called home” to the local cell towers. The only noise I am getting is rustling of my hands moving on the camera body and focusing. You can reduce that by setting wind suppression to medium. Wilson When I made the video linked in the first post, I actually made sure there was no electronic devices interfering. I turned of the computer and my iPhone and turned of the printer. So, No it is not the sound of a GSM phone. It is a faulty camera. Even though it is not a "real world" problem in most cases, the sound should not be there. And it is a damn shame that it is. Rick Posted November 23, 2013 Share #32 Posted November 23, 2013 Same here. The sound emanates from inside the camera. To doubt it is silly. Why would everyone's sound be the same if it was an external event? In the world of electronic radio interference, it is a birdy.
wlaidlaw Posted November 23, 2013 Share #33 Posted November 23, 2013 Rick, My car radio used to make the same interference sound, irrespective of what make of phone or which cell phone supplier/frequency band it was on. I think this type of interference is due to a phenomenon called heterodyning. It could be that certain cameras have a part of a chip which is heterodyning with an external radio frequency source, e.g. cell phone, cell phone tower, WiFi router, cordless phone, PC or any of the other multiple radio frequency sources in the modern world. Some of these interferences are very odd. Our Roberts WiFi/Internet kitchen radio, will not work if it is anywhere near our Microwave cooker, even if the cooker is not switched on - go figure! digi2ap Posted November 23, 2013 Share #34 Posted November 23, 2013 Certainly plausible from my recollection of car radio interference caused by the alternator. Recent experience of mobile heterodyne interference does not have such a regular repetition as that which the OP posted in the video. The recording of such a repetitive sound almost seems like the fault is mechanical but that, I hope, is implausible! I'm interested in the outcome of this thread as I would be a potential buyer of the M, in part, for the video capabilities.

Wilson Heterodyning is the combination of two signals in a receiver to produce other frequencies, the heterodynes, and one is filtered out in the mixer and one is used. Birdies are caused by products of the internal oscillators in a receiver and are always present, but should be outside the receivers range. A strong signal or two signals outside the receiver can combine in a receivers amplifier circuitry and cause a spurious responses which is called intermodulation. My Leica M240 is picking up nothing that sounds like these phenomena. It is just a steady beep-beep-beep. It really doesn't matter where I am in the world or where my phone is. I really believe it is caused by the circuitry inside the camera or it is actually a faint sound inside the camera that the mic picks up in a quiet environment when the circuit gain rises. Maybe, I'm wrong, but I really do suspect all of the M240 cameras do this. It is just not noticed under most circumstances. By the way, one of my hobbies used to be building radios and RF amplifiers. You know, tubes! I hold a current Armature Radio License. -
wlaidlaw Posted November 24, 2013 Share #36 Posted November 24, 2013 Rick, My radio knowledge is very out of date. At school in the early 1960’s I used to do HAM radio with a Number 19 Mk.3 tank radio, modified with more coils to give wider frequency ranges and an RAF type R1083 out of a Blenheim bomber plus a pair of huge outdoor Yagi array aerials. All using morse code rather than voice, of course. Wilson

Mupa Posted November 25, 2013 Share #38 Posted November 25, 2013 I can report that on short tests (20 secs) I get a muffled beep beep sound when doing video using M 240 with a Lexar Professional 32 GB card - when near or not near other electronic equipment. However, when using the SanDisk Eye-Fi 8 GB card I get no beep beep sound. Very very quick test, not all variables checked but I wonder whether (for my camera at any rate) the sound is dependent on which SD card I am using. More testing to be done.... Ginko Posted November 25, 2013 Share #39 Posted November 25, 2013 Well, I too have this countinious "beeping" sound in videos recorded with the M (using a SanDisk here). Bizarre thing.
jackk Posted January 4, 2014 Share #40 Posted January 4, 2014 Experienced the same beep... beep... beep beep beep ... sound in multiple videos recorded in a somewhat quiet environment (40db ambient noise of TV & water in a turtle tank). I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB SDHC I 45MB/Sec memory card. Will test more to see if the sound exists in different environments.....
