semrich Posted April 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I managed to get a few shots off with the CV Ultra Wide Heliar 12mm before security told me no tripods, I took this one and a second (before packing the tripod) while showing him how little space it took up and showed him how I frame and take the shot, I did the same thing when the second guard came up to see what we were doing and the same way got a second shot for insurance. Artichoke Posted April 13, 2007 Share #3 Posted April 13, 2007 should I ever get to Istanbul, this site is high on my list of places to visit your fine photograph is very evocative and really makes me want to book a flight I wonder if they would allow a tripod's use if you applied in advance? semrich Posted April 13, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted April 13, 2007 Stuart - As always thank you, and unless you use a tripod it would be difficult, this was taken with the M8 at iso 640, 16 sec exposure. I was really lucky to get this. Arthur - Thanks, Istanbul is a great place for photography. The best I was able to determine while communicating to the security people in my limited Turkish and their limited English that to get permission to use a tripod would cost about $360. As you may notice from the photo there is a guardrail all around the walkway, next time I go I will take my table top tripod that has a velcro strap that I can use to strap it to the handrail. They shouldn't have a problem with that, they also allow flash.
kuddel Posted April 13, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 13, 2007 Hello Richard, a good picture of an interssting place. I did not know that it is forbidden to use tripod in the underground cistern. I think you took the picture at the junction to the 'gorgonian column'? I hope you do not mind that I place a picture that I made there (I find yours better). But maybe you find it interessting. I had no tripod and placed my D3 on the railing near the entrance, exposure time 4 sec, ISO 100. I found it difficult to take photos there, not only because it is so dark, but I could not find something makes the picture charactristic. I found the colours and surface of these ancient cloumns most interesting, beside the general structure of the gloomy place. Regards, Andreas
erg Posted April 14, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2007 Congrat's Richard, for that succesfull shot ! That's funny. During my trip to Istanbul last week I almost made the same shots. There was only one picture that was acceptable without tripod, with the 15 mm CV. Best,
semrich Posted April 14, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted April 14, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Kuddel, erg, - Thanks for your comments and your photographs. The place is like a hall of mirrors for vantage points, and the lighting with different color lamps will drive the white balance crazy. I noticed that now at least they don't have the lights dimming in a cycle from bright to dark. I'm sure you noticed also that your vantage point also must take into consideration the many places where there is water dripping from the ceiling. kuddel Posted April 14, 2007 Share #8 Posted April 14, 2007 Richard, I tried to catch the room by taking a picture were the room is mirrored by surface of water, but all that pictures were blured too much. Exposure time was up to 20 sec, too much for shot from the railing. With the white balance I made a lot of post processing and put it to 2100 K finally. Your are very right with the dripping water Regards, Andreas

stunsworth Posted April 17, 2007 Share #13 Posted April 17, 2007 And it's just around the corner from Aghia Sophia, Tokapi Palance and the Blue Mosque! Quite an area. Do they still have the music playing in the background? Last time I was there I was hoping that they'd turn it off. I was staying at a small hotel not too far away when I was last in Istanbul. semrich Posted April 17, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted April 17, 2007 Steve - Yea, all that and just a short ride on a minibus and ferry and I'm in the middle of it all to wander all around taking pictures I can't tell you about the music, I may not have noticed it, I get kind of focused when I have camera in hand.
