NZDavid Posted September 27, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I thought this might be the internet connection my end, which is perennially slow in New Zealand, but the problem has persisted for a few days. Threads are very slow to open or they freeze. Other sites are fine. I wonder if there is a logjam somewhere along the line?
Advertisement Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Hi NZDavid, Take a look here Forum slow. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 27, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2013 No problem this end of the planet. Sorry!
NZDavid Posted September 27, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted September 27, 2013 Hmm, forum is speeding up then slowing down and so now are other sites, so it must be this end! One would have thought that by now the internet would be faster and more reliable, but there are great variations in speed from place to place. NZ has only one international cable. The only alternative is satellite!
NZDavid Posted September 29, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted September 29, 2013 I identified the problem: Some posts and sites are very slow in loading or refuse to load using Safari but open OK in Firefox (iMac running Mountain Lion). No idea why.
jaapv Posted September 29, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 29, 2013 Chrome is probably a lot faster. I find the newer versions of Safari quite buggy. JPG rendering is lagging behind other browsers as well.
NZDavid Posted October 1, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted October 1, 2013 Now it is really slow with all browsers. Safari not working at all and Firefox very slow. Strangely, other sites are working fine -- it's just the Leica forum that is going slow.

I think, but I am not sure, that this forum is served by separate, distributed computers. If true, then one that serves you might be responding poorly. I get good response here in South-East Minnesota, USA.
andybarton Posted October 1, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 1, 2013 That's news to me if it's true. AFAIK, all hosting is from Germany, regardless of where you're located.
pico Posted October 1, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 1, 2013 That's news to me if it's true. AFAIK, all hosting is from Germany, regardless of where you're located. Technically the site can originate from, and be held to German law and also be distributed through servers elsewhere. David, blame it on the NSA. I seem to recall the admin mentioning some kind of distributed serving. Maybe not.
NZDavid Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted October 2, 2013 Much faster today! Some other sites were also slow yesterday and other NZ customers were reporting problems, so the problem may be this end but dependent on where the servers originate. If not the NSA, perhaps the federal shutdown in the US caused by politicians! Fingers crossed it's better now. I'd miss the forum!
farnz Posted October 3, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 3, 2013 David, I suspect that the performance is to do with the time of day and the earth's rotation. Since the site is located in Germany, in the morning Germany will be above NZ on the globe and the data will flow downwards at good speed but at night NZ will be above Germany and the data will have to flow uphill, slowing it down. It's quite simple to work out if you're technically gifted. Pete.
NZDavid Posted October 3, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted October 3, 2013 Thanks Pete, I think you are absolutely right. NZ is actually on top (most maps are Eurocentric) so the data has to fight its way uphill, much like a salmon leaping up a waterfall. We have just had the vernal equinox, so that will account for more variation as our side shifts closer to the sun, thus heating the cables and making data flow faster on this side but freezing it in the northern half. Servers bat the data around the globe like ping pong balls. I think the early pioneers of the telegraph really did have trouble sending and receiving a clear message. pop Posted October 4, 2013 Share #14 Posted October 4, 2013 That fish now is in Heaven which makes the journey end very well indeed, depending on whom you ask (e.g., the bear). I am also growing impatient with the delivery times of some of the forum pages. The last time this was the case, the delays were due to some extra links for providing ads and collecting traffic analysis. The response times of the forum servers were perfectly ok. pop Posted October 5, 2013 Share #15 Posted October 5, 2013 The forum was slow here yesterday and (I think) the day before. It is now back to its normal speed which is perfectly fine.
pop Posted October 6, 2013 Share #16 Posted October 6, 2013 The forum is now sluggish again. So is the access to Google mail. The phenomenon appears to vary with the time of the day.
pico Posted October 6, 2013 Share #17 Posted October 6, 2013 The forum is now sluggish again. So is the access to Google mail. The phenomenon appears to vary with the time of the day. Perhaps I have found how to cope. I can anticipate when my server becomes sluggish, so I take that moment as an opportunity to sample my favorite brandy and another if necessary. All is good. Ah, is great being retired!
daniel88 Posted March 4, 2014 Share #18 Posted March 4, 2014 Hmm, community is boosting up then reducing down and so now are other websites, so it must be this end! One would have believed that by now the world wide web would be quicker and more efficient, but there are excellent modifications in rate from position to position. NZ has only one worldwide wire. The only substitute is satellite! 9seed
