Mixalis Posted September 25, 2013 Author Share #21 Posted September 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Unless one is afflicted with an inability to see in color, I don't quite understand all the fuss & commotion. Again, I love B&W photography, but it needs to strike home in a profound way to have any real impact. For me, color is much more powerful and indelible. Do you dream in B&W? Thanks. I'm not in the least against colour, otherwise I wouldn't have bought an M(240). I suppose it is horses for courses. But I do admit to having a bit of a fetish about black and white. It probably dates back to my early years as a journalist, working entirely in monochrom. Colour printing was a rare treat for the ueber-glossies. And I actually love the rather technical nature of the files from the MM. As for dreams. Well, I only started dreaming in monochrom after I got the MM. No accounting for tastes! Advertisement Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Hi Mixalis, Take a look here Review of Lieca Monochrom. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mixalis Posted September 25, 2013 Author Share #22 Posted September 25, 2013 Nice review. I'm in my 60's and grew up shooting Kodachrome. I sold several images I took as a kid at the 1964 Worlds Fair. I like the MM, but the monochromic images from the MM don't strike me has having any fidelity with the real world. I love details & love B&W photography. I own several Leica M cameras, film & digital. Unless one is afflicted with an inability to see in color, I don't quite understand all the fuss & commotion. Again, I love B&W photography, but it needs to strike home in a profound way to have any real impact. For me, color is much more powerful and indelible. Do you dream in B&W? Ben: I thought I had replied to your message but it seems to have gone astray. Perhaps I forgot to press the submit button. I said that I have always liked b&w from my youthful days as a journalist when everything was in monochrome. I have a bit of a nostalgic fetish for the genre. I am certainly not against colour and, indeed, enjoy my M240 and other cameras. It's just that the MM is something special. As for dreams....well, I only started to dream in monochrome before I bought MM. Now the dream has come to reality. Mike

Me, I shot Kodachrome for nature and B&W for people. Color has made inroads, but I still have a strong personal preference for B&W. Most Americans under age 50 who I know tend to prefer color unless they're photographers themselves. People over 50 have a special affection for B&W. But younger friends who grew up in Russia and Eastern Europe tend to prefer B&W. Could the preference be mostly what we're exposed to at a certain age, just as most of us keep a lifelong preference for the popular music of our teen years? --Peter

Vieri Posted October 2, 2013 Share #27 Posted October 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Very good review Mike, I thoroughly enjoyed it. One small nit: there actually IS another monochrome camera on the market, is PhaseOne's Monochrome digital back coupled with any camera that supports it in its various versions
Mixalis Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share #28 Posted October 2, 2013 Very good review Mike, I thoroughly enjoyed it. One small nit: there actually IS another monochrome camera on the market, is PhaseOne's Monochrome digital back coupled with any camera that supports it in its various versions Thanks for your nice comments. I was aware of the Phase One but, for better or worse, decided it was so specialised that it didn't count. Perhaps I was wrong and you were right to raise this. Mixalis Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share #29 Posted October 2, 2013 Thank you Very muchWonderful article! I have a MM from some days...now I have to decide how to set speed Max/iso Max...please any suggestions? Thanks Claudio You can do this in the main menu. You can set the maximum exposure speed you wish to allow and also limit the maximum ISO for when you have Auto ISO selected. If you can't find this, please come back to me. wilfredo Posted October 3, 2013 Share #31 Posted October 3, 2013 Thanks. Mike Mark, I appreciate your enthusiasm for the MM and enjoyed your review. We all have different preferences. I enjoy both color and B&W but at the end of the day I lean towards B&W primarily for the tonal range. Case in point is a show I am currently having of 23 photos,18 of which were done with Leica gear and of those 18 only 3 are in color. Even the 5 photos I did with Canon gear are mostly B&W. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/302954-come-show.html#post2521182 Ben has a particular and well defined style which we all appreciate on the photo forum. For his signature "people photography" color is best and I can see how that works for him. Despite the lack of color I believe B&W photography penetrates the human psyche at a deeper level. After much deliberation I decided to take the plunge this week and I put it an order for the MM. If all goes according to plan I will be messing with it this weekend. I think the only thing I will miss is the option of the B&W filters on my PSCS4 software which gives me lots of leverage. Nevertheless, I look forward to the outstanding dynamic range, resolution, and ISO performance the MM has to offer. After many years of M8 shooting, this will be a natural evolution, and of course I will love shooting full frame. I am eager to get this tool and suspect it will be a breath of fresh air. I anticipate it will get me out shooting once again! Cheers!
wilfredo Posted October 3, 2013 Share #32 Posted October 3, 2013 These MM photos are worth a look! http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m9/294008-monochrome-beispielbilder.html
thighslapper Posted October 8, 2013 Share #33 Posted October 8, 2013 Thanks Mike. I agree with every word. These days for a serious days planned shooting I take both M and MM ...... and the MM always returns more memorable images than the M....... You can basically forget ISO with the MM which allows enormous freedom with regard to what of ... and how .... you can take photographs. It really is one of the few photographers cameras on the market .... .... oh .... and nice to finally put a face to George ....... his photos are real stand-outs .... and now I know why ...... age and experience ....
