Cases for M240 & M9

To protect my M9, I bought a case from Artisan & Artist. To my disappointment, I found out that the case was leather veneer rather than solid leather. On the upper part, this leather veneer was bonded to thick metal foil. On the base of the case, the veneer was bonded to cardboard - ordinary cardboard!!!

My next case was from Classic Cases in the UK. Their cases are made from prime quality solid leather, and I am delighted with them.

I have attached an image of their M9 and M240 case. The M9 case is on the left, and the M240 case is on the right. The M9 case is viewed from the front, and the M240 case from the rear. From the front, the two cases are virtually identical.

What is your problem? Bought a M240 last week accidentally. Furthermore I ordered a Leica camera protector and a Leica ever ready case (sent the camera protector back). The camera protector is included in the ever ready case but with additional screen cover. Both items are impressive, I guess there is no need for further accessory. Well done Leica!

Just bought myself the M camera protector (half-case ) in black. Very nice. I prefer it to my Luigi M9 case as it's not as 'rustic'.

The cream/white stitching on the case also matches the stitching on my A&A black leather strap.

(such a misnomer) as I want to have quick access to the camera for immediate use, and the screen, and I accept that this case offers more limited protection.

I did have to try a few until I got one with the best fit as the slightest misplacement of the press studs will affect the fit of the case.

I ordered a similar case from Angelo Smaldore in Florence. Placed the order, received a confirmation within minutes followed by a paypal invoice. I payed for FedEx delivery. Received another email from the seller thanking me for my payment and stating the case was in stock and would ship right away I should expect delivery in 2 -3 days. After 3 days i emailed for shipping confirmation and the FexEx tracking number. Its been over a week now and after 3 emails I have not received the case or reply to my emails.

I can understand that sometimes things happen resulting in delays but I can not except companies that do not reply to email inquiries or return phone calls. This service is what i would expect from Walmart !!!

Ignore above post - actually deleted part of it as I submitted it. Should read:

I bought the 240 camera case which is a full case. The great advantage of it is that the front part can be taken off and what is left is a great high quality protector case with a linked on magnetic display cover (excuse my english) much better than the normal LEICA (only) protector which has no display cover. Disadvantage: it is very expensive. i paid 360 EURO in Munich but I have never seen something better, perfect fitting....

After reading about it on Leica Rumours; I bought this case from China.

Genuine Cow Leather Protective Bottom Case Cover Bag for LEICA M(type 240) Genuine Cow Leather Protective Bottom Case Cover Bag for LEICA M(type 240) [00730048]- US$79.99 - DAYJOYBUY

Although it does not fit as well as my Luigi's case on my M9; it works well on my M240 for US $79.99. I am happy with it and it even have a tripod screw at the bottom. The thumb grip at the dial on the M240 does not provide a good grip so it improvised by fixing a silicon button on the leather of this case and it works well without having the buy the thumbs-up.

On the 13th product picture the camera appears to have an attached eyepiece that looks as if it is either a magnifier or adjustable dioptre. I can't find it on the site (their unusual translations makes the search engine difficult to use). Does anyone know what it is or have a link? Thanks.

I am surprised that the OP was disappointed by an Artisan & Artist product. I have just received my second strap from this company, via ShootLight.nl, and was impressed by the standards of finish and packaging. I bought another in anticipation of getting a new M, although my existing one, after several years in use, hasn't a trace of wear showing. The Netherlands company delivered to the UK within four days too.:)

I am the OP. My first A&A purchase was their wrist strap. It was solid leather.

Like you, I was delighted with it then, and I still am now.

Their half case is also well made. However, I was very disappointed to find that I had paid $250 Cdn for a case which is merely leather veneer bonded to cardboard, and to metal foil.

For that price, I feel that I deserve better than veneer and cardboard.

I bought a Luigi halfcase for my M240 3 weeks ago, just perfect, No unprotected metal insid, smooth, excellent leather, only touches th LV at the top.

Excellent web site, bill easy, send within 4 days.

The best I have seen in the last 6 mths.

My first half case was a Zhou for my M8. The quality and fit were fine and the price was right. Sold it with the camera.

When I moved to the M9 I picked up a Luigi half case. It was a fancy one with access doors for the battery and SD card and a matching replacement base plate. I didn't like it...the fit was poor, with part of the screen and buttons covered. It added too much thickness to the body for my liking and made handling clumsy. The attached rear flap was constantly in the way. The access doors in the leather were OK, but it seemed apparent to me that eventually with use they were likely to not stay closed. The replacement base plate was a tight fit and seemed lower quality than the Leica original. I know these cases are well liked by some, but I didn't like it at all. Different tastes I guess.

Finally I picked up a A&A case and this one was the best IMO. I don't know about what it was made of but it worked well. It was light and had the right amount of rigidity for it's minimalist design. It didn't add excessive thickness and by not attempting to surround the screen and buttons, there was no blockage issue. It fit perfectly. If you are worried about protecting the rear LCD this isn't for you, but my main concern was wear on the base and sides and it protected these well.

I bought two Artisan and Artist straps recently. The slide strap and another one witch I forgot the name of. (it's the one with white stitches on black leather). I'm really disapointed of booth as I read all good of this company.

The slide strap was ok, but if you look carefully it has some missalignment when the parts is stitched together. The second strap has so thin leather that it looks frigail and not the quality that I payed for. Actually I could bought a better leather strap at Walmart. I payed about $90 each.

I think it's pretty clear that on cases and straps we probably all want different things, and there is quite a bit of variance between the different manufacturers, and probably even within their product lines.

I didn't like the Luigi half case that I had, but I really liked the strap that came with it. I have a A&A leather strap, and like you I find it somewhat fragile in appearance (it's not an issue for me since it's on a X100, but I wouldn't use it on an M). On the other hand I've owned a couple of the A&A cloth straps and they work great. It's good to have the choices.

Yes that's the picture. I think I've identified the magnifier. It looks like one of the Match Technical E-Clypse series of magnifiers with the silicone rubber eyecup removed, similar to the one at the bottom of the linked page. I've found pictures of earlier examples where the lettering is only in white and extends around the circumference as in the picture you posted.

Bob.

ETA: I think it's the E-Clypse 1.45x-34D with Adjustable Diopter.

to me Artisan and Artisan cases look too much as an industrial product rather then "handcrafted"

Uk classic cases look much better as i see in your photos

anyway actually i m very happy with a italian angelo pelle half case for my M240 ( angelo pelle ) , for me the best compromise between quality and price, with 180 euro i got a case and a neck strap with very good leather ,hand stitched , back cover for LCD and a very usefull grip (as i already wrote, i see my M too much slippery without any case and a grip is really welcome)

I've just ordered a brand new Arte di mano soft leather case and matching strap.

Decided to go with black with red stitching for a little contrast on my black M9.

I'm currently using the Leica half-case with an A&A Slider strap or naked with the Leica grip.

I'll post pics once I get the Arte di mano (JNK) goodies - will be a few weeks I think.

thought about the Luigi stuff, but my friend who got me into Leica had the strap and case for his M240 and the strap 'separated' from the lug ring thus dropping his camera...luckily onto his carpet with no damage. he contacted Luigi regarding this and got a response that it was not a fault in his product and that was it (no refund, no repair). needless to say my friend was choked and I think i'll stay away from Luigi stuff personally. :(
