Advertisement Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Hi gammaIII, Take a look here help for leica IIIC luftwaffen Eigentum, fake or not. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 14, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2013 Not without seeing the images of the camera, we can't. And even then there are some convincing fakes around In general too many of the offerings on eBay are doubtful. Personally would only buy such a camera through a trusted site like Westlicht, Schouten, Red Dot, etc.
doubice Posted September 15, 2013 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2013 Is this the camera? Leica IIIc 365678 Luftwaffen Eigentum FL 38079 | eBay It appears genuine but, I doubt that the engraver would have gotten away with a crooked 'Luftwaffen Eigentum' sign. I am quite sure that there is a list with serial number information on genuine Luftwaffe Leica IIIc's. Also, the finish looks too new for a camera that was manufactured in 1940 and would have spent some time 'in the heat of the battle'. Cheers, Jan
jaapv Posted September 15, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 15, 2013 Also: There is no photograph of the backside. Normally the markings on the back have been defaced like the lens is. I agree, suspiciously clean, but it is possible, I suppose..

jerzy Posted September 15, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 15, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) neither camera with SN 393xxx nor lens with SN 544523 are listed as military Leica in publication "Srewmount cameras with military engravings" from Leica Historica. I would therefore be very cautious if both are genuine military. jerzy
sabears Posted September 15, 2013 Share #8 Posted September 15, 2013 This is a reliable shop, but I think they don't know what they are selling, in this case. I know that camera, has been on sale for a very long time, till now. I'm sorry but the camera is not an original Luftwaffe E., this belongs to batches sent after the war mainly to the U.S. Army. The story is well known. Moreover looking at the font used, even if the photo is not big, clearly you see that are only similar but not identical to the original. Finally, there are not military cameras with serial numbers so high. Hope this helps, kind regards.
jc_braconi Posted September 15, 2013 Share #9 Posted September 15, 2013 I have the book edited by the Leica Historica from Germany with all the Leica items sent to Berlin during the WWII including s/n contract # dates etc but too far from me at the moment. Certainly an another member will help you with this list.

jc_braconi Posted September 15, 2013 Share #11 Posted September 15, 2013 You did well, if you look at the rear engraving you can easily that it is not in line/parallel to the body (higher on the left than on the right)
