M8 is still most sensitive to IR.

 

But IR cut filters "leak" a little - especially the thin ones still needed to work with M wide-angles without smearing the image corners.

 

See picture on previous page: exposure ISO 8000, shutter speed 1/30, f/16 - effective sunlight infrared ISO of 30. So that camera was sensing about 1/267th as much IR light as it would have visible light - but with a long enough exposure, you can still capture the IR.

I thought all Leica Ms, except for the M8, had built-in IR cut filters; including the Monochrom. Is this right? Is the M8 still the best for IR. If not, what is the recommendation?

The M8 has an IR filter as well. About 50% effective, as opposed to 70/80% on other models.
