Hello everyone, my name is Andrea, I'm 36 and I live in Milan, Italy.

I decided to join this forum as I'm about to buy my first Leica, an M9.

I've been taking pictures for 20 years, more or less. For the first 15 I used Contax/Zeiss gear, both SLR and rangefinder (a G1). Then I switched to digital (5D Mk I and a Mk III more recently), but I did miss the quality and the magic of manual cameras and good lenses...

A couple of months ago I bought a Bessa R2A, a Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZM, a Canon 50mm f/1.4 (the "Japanese Summilux", as they say), and a Leitz Canada Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.

Since I truly enjoyed this kit so far, I decided to sell my 5D and 4 lenses to fund the purchase of an used M9 - I found a nice one and I'm going to buy it soon hopefully.

I admit I've always been a huge fan of Carl Zeiss lenses (I dearly miss my 85mm f/1.4), I'm really curious about Leica products and I'm sure I'll be equally happy with them - or possibly even more!

Thanks in advance!

A.

Welcome, Andrea!

People often say that Leica lenses (by design) have slightly lower contrast than Zeiss lenses so don't be surprised if that's what you see in your photos. The benefit of that of course is that the transition from dark to light areas and the other way around is not as abrupt and produces smoother graduation of tones. Some prefer the Zeiss look, others prefer the Leica look and others, like me, like them both.:)

Pete.
