matrix metering

If I may add a couple of questions, in case anyone's informed on the subject:

  • will there even be a new film M? I'm skeptical, but I would like to see the M3 being built again to the exact same specs as the original (late models);
  • will there ever be a medium format film M? please?

Will there ever be a film M w/matrix mertering? M7 auto-metering is only a step in that direction.

I would think the chances are zero. From a technical point of view where would the matrix sensor fit? And from a commercial perspective I expect sales of film Leicas are too low to justify the investment even if it were possible.

- Leica MP with 0.85 viewfinder should be as close as possible to a M3 with some modern features.

There hardly exists a demand for a M3 replica, as enough well-functioning original M3 are available.

- Medium format M - have a look for "Texas-Leica" ;)

I beg to differ - I have the 0.85 viewfinder on an M6, and it is in no way equal to that of my M3.

The MP also lacks the M3's timer, which I find to be a very useful feature on the camera.

I would buy a newly made M3 mainly because I'm worried about the rangefinder system developing age-related problems.

I do hope you weren't serious! :)

Actually - apart from the fact that they are fixed lens - probably the closest thing to a medium-format M are the Fuji GF670 and GF670W.

Any other alternatives?

Given the way that traditional metering is implemented on a film M, and the way that matrix metering is implemented on (say) a a Leica R camera, it isn't easy to see a way that this would be at all practicable,
