Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 30, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you were on a waiting list for a M(240) and decided in the meantime to buy a Leica MM as you couldn't be bothered waiting for the M and the weekend before you were going to buy the MM you were offered a new M(240).............what would you do 1/. buy the M(240) and get the MM later or 2/. Buy the MM and get a M(240) later If it was me I think I would go for # 1 as the MM are more ready available whereas the M is still a hot item Forgot to mention that the purchaser will eventually have both the MM and the M but cant afford them both together at this time Or as some of you might/will say (who gives a %$#$ on what others think just buy whatever you want:D

algrove Posted August 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 30, 2013 I think your last sentence sums it up. Now get off the rig and get some piss. I this even English I just wrote? Seriously, I think it depends on if you regularly use hard to focus lenses-Nocti, 75, 90 or 135 or might use R lenses. You can shoot DNG color and B&W on the M just like you could on the M9. Do you want to carry around 2 bodies or one body and more lenses?
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 30, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 30, 2013 Carrying two bodies isn't an issue if it was me as I now take a D3s and D 600 whenever I go out so two Leica bodies and a few lenses wouldn't be an issue at all Been on the piss all day, getting ready to call it quits for the day. Stef63 Posted August 30, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 30, 2013 Depends on the timeframe between the two purchases. If its month's then I would do M first then MM. If it's like a year then the availability constraint of the M will probably be history. But I personally would in that case do the same. First M and then MM. Sept 14, a year from now, is Photokina and Leica will for sure announce something. Could be a CMOS based MM.... but this is highly speculative. M will most probably get only a cosmetic change in this timeframe. BTW While waiting for the M I purchased an MM. But that was back in Dec last year and I only got the M last June. Paul J Posted August 30, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 30, 2013 A quandry for sure. Personally I would take the M or an ME first. I will certainly get an MM at some point but I need to shoot colour with my M Lenses too and that would take preference for me.
MirekE Posted August 30, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 30, 2013 I woud buy an M and got MM later when it is based on the M technology. Then I would try to convince myself that it is my last camera for long, long, long time.
efreed2754 Posted August 30, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) For me get the M and see how B&W is with M. Shot MM and while do convert some images to B@W, not enough advantage for me to get the MM. YMMV as they say; regardless of how much $$$ someone has, what is the gain in utility of the MM over the M with B&W? Believe MM intended for those who consistently prefer B&W and wish to take advantage of higher ISO and 50 APO Summicron. Ed
NikonJeff Posted August 30, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 30, 2013 That's a tough decision for sure. I was in exactly the same situation about 3 weeks ago and decided to buy the MM. I love B&W, love the ergonomics of the M9 (so I now have both) and decided to wait on the M until it's been "out there" for a while. Love my Leica's but it seems that all too often it's taking a while to get bugs/firmware etc. worked out (the M9 firmware is still flawed and Leica has no idea when/if it will be fixed from my emails to Leica in NJ). I'm happy with my decision but if you "need" the latest then the M is your answer.
thighslapper Posted August 30, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 30, 2013 The answer comes from asking the opposite question...... If I had both an MM and M and I could keep only one...... which would I have ...... ??? I have both.... and without hesitation I would keep the MM. When I take out both the % of keepers and the most memorable shots are always from the MM..... it forces you to think more about lighting, composition and tonal variation. From a purely personal photographic satisfaction point of view I could live without colour and an M if I had an MM
Guest tanks Posted August 30, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 30, 2013 Assuming $$$ is not an object, and you wish to buy both, I'd get the M first as one can pick up an MM at any time whereas the M is still a bit rare in the wild.

Gerard Posted August 31, 2013 Share #16 Posted August 31, 2013 If I were in such a lucky position; I'd get the MM first. It's an amazing camera. Then, by the time I had the funds for another body, a better looking M-p should be out, along with more refined firmware. Of course, I am not in such a lucky position. :'(

Jeff S Posted August 31, 2013 Share #19 Posted August 31, 2013 Apart from IQ (about that next), the M240 is a much nice camera to use in terms of RF, shutter, battery, processor, 2m frame lines, weather sealing, etc, etc. The MM will likely be updated to the new M platform at some point (according to Stefan Daniel at his last Photokina interview). Then what? I just got the new M and expected the b/w to be no better, and possibly worse, compared to my M8.2s, which I prefer to the M9 for b/w. But I was pleasantly surprised by the results, and will keep one of the M8.2s only as a back-up, not for primary b/w use. If you haven't tried b/w on the new M, I would do that first and then decide if something is lacking with your b/w results. In the meantime, you won't be missing out on color shots, assuming of course that you can get the camera in short order. I got mine a couple of weeks after deciding to make the purchase, so it shouldn't be too difficult if you call diligently. Jeff
