sandro Posted August 23, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) In the Complete catalogue (German version) of Leitz from october 1976 also the MD-22 is listed for 18x24mm. Has this camera really been produced? The MD-2 seems to be produced in Germany and Canada, most of them in Germany. But when I see pictures of an MD-2 they Always show the Canada engraving on the back. Does anyone know more this? Lex
Advertisement Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Hi sandro, Take a look here MD-22 and MD-2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted August 26, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 26, 2013 Can you post the copy of the catalog's page which lists the MD-22 ? Frankly, I thought that this "half frame MD-2" was made only as a prototype : the only items I have seen, properly engraved "MD 22", are two "Betriebsk cameras" , #001 and #009 (here a picture of this item) : Welcome, dear visitor! It's a surprise, for me, that a catalog which lists this camera (with which code?) does exist. Afaik, it was a "Canada only" item, a "lab camera" which had (like std. MD 2) the facility for inserting a strip for writing notes/data/identifiers onto the frame's border; from the pictures it is not clear if it had the frame counter regularly scaled to 80 (for 24x18 frames) as it was for the M4-P half frame, which also came from Canada :
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! jc_braconi Posted August 26, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 26, 2013 Luigi, I think I had seen it in one of my catalog, but there are far from me at the moment so I cannot confirm with documentation. May be it was on an add on leaflet for this year catalog...
sandro Posted August 26, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted August 26, 2013 Luigi and JC, perhaps I was too quick. The catalogue says this item was "in preparation", the same message was given on the preceding item, the MD-2. Here's the page. Thanks for the pictures, Luigi! Any ideas about the second part of my question, about the MD-2? Best, Lex Welcome, dear visitor! Any ideas about the second part of my question, about the MD-2? Best, Lex Where have you found evidence that most of MD-2 were made in Germany ? By logic, looking at the years of production it ought to be a Canadian product... and this is consistent with the items that appear for sale (I saw only items with the typical "canada" white engraving on the back) ; the last batch of 200 (1704601- 800) is indeed within the numbering where also Germany M4-P were made... but I don't think this is so significant for such a specialized camera. sandro Posted August 27, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted August 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Luigi, I agree. My confusion probably comes from Laney, who mentioned that of the total production of the MD-2 of 2593 camera's only 951 were produced in Canada. But he may be mistaken.... I do remember easily numbers (more than names...) and that 951 doesn't sound new to me... maybe there was a thread on the subject some years ago... jc_braconi Posted August 27, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 27, 2013 Some other M half frame : Leica M4-2 Half Frame (1980) An unauthorized factory product with a half-frame format instead of the standard full-frame. Only a handful were made, and they are all marked "Half-frame". Otherwise the features are the same as the Leica M4-2 which is like the M4, but is designed for fast action work since it accepts a motor drive and lacks a self-timer. Leica M4-P Half frame (1983) Yet another unauthorized factory product with a half-frame format instead of the standard full-frame. Only a handful were made, and they are all marked "Half-frame". Otherwise the features are the same as the Leica M4-P which is the same as the M4, but had different frame marks in the viewfinder to allow for the use of more lenses. Welcome, dear visitor! JC, have you ever had in your hands a M4-2 or M4-P Half Frame ? I wonder if they made something about the Viewfinder... not a problem on MD-2... but of course they, in theory, ought to have rebuilt completely the frame system (which, in M4-P, included also 28 and 75...) , or, at least, to "darken" a slice of the VF at sides, like they did not so badly on the Half Frame Leica 72 (this, of course, could had been effective for the widest frame only) : Welcome, dear visitor!
